Notes: Reactive ion beam deposition has been used to grow c-axis-oriented superconducting thin films in the Bi-Ca-Sr-Cu-O (BCSCO) system around the cation ratio 1:1:1:1 on single-crystal (001) MgO. The films show a single superconducting transition with an initial onset near 85 K and a critical current of 5×104 A/cm2 at 10 K. Two different BCSCO-containing phases have been identified in the thin films: one with a tetragonal pseudo-body-centered subcell, c=24.4 A(ring), which is not superconducting above 28 K, and a second with c=30.6 A(ring), which is responsible for the superconductivity. Electron diffraction measurements on the 30.6 A(ring) phase are consistent with those previously reported for the bulk ceramic.

Notes: Abstract Two new effects associated with flux penetration and pinning in superconducting YBa2Cu3Ox are demonstrated. One of these is focussing of magnetic field lines by the superconductor and the other is magnetic suspension. The existence of stable equilibrium in suspension is shown to be related directly to hysteresis observed in the force-separation relation for a magnet and the superconductor. We also observe that the levitation height of a magnet increases with the magnet volume, contrary to results in the literature.

Notes: Abstract The temperature and magnetic-field dependences of the remanent magnetization have been determined from far-field measurements for thallium ceramic samples. The current flow that gives rise to the observed magnetization is intragranular. The results are consistent with flux-creep-controlled transport with a distance between pinning centers of ∼- 1/2/μm. Using near-field measurements, the superconducting properties are found to be heterogeneous on a scale of ≫ 1 mm. Magnetic domains have been induced by pplying spatial variation in the applied field.

Notes: Abstract Hysteretic force-separation relations for Tl, Bi and Y based superconductors and a magnet are compared. The magnitudes of the forces, the hysteresis, and the magnetic stiffness were all largest in the three-layer Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3Ox compound, indicating strong flux pinning. The hysteresis in both two and three layer thallium compounds was sufficient to generate attractive forces as the superconductor and magnet were moved apart. The use of remanent fields to improve stability of levitated and suspended magnets is described.

Notes: Diethynylphenyl ether (DEPE) was synthesized and its thermal polymerization studied by NMR, IR, and DSC techniques. DEPE is a crystalline solid that melts at 72-73°C and undergoes polymerization beginning at about 150°C. The heat of polymerization measured by DSC was 53 ± 2 kcal/mole. Thermomechanical analysis (TMA) of the fully cured resin showed softening behavior at temperatures in excess of 400°C. Weight loss up to 720°C was only 21%. A mechanism of polymerization based on the analysis of IR and NMR data for party polymerized material below 300°C is proposed.
