Notes: We present the case of an 11-month-old baby with a burn that healed normally over a month, but subsequently developed successive crops of blisters over the scar. There were no changes in his general condition. Clinical, immunological, histological and ultrastructural studies provided a diagnosis of mechanical dermatitis produced by microtrauma. Electron microscopy studies revealed the sub-epidermal nature of the blisters and the presence of underlying fibrin deposits.

Notes: : Recharge is an important parameter for models that simulate water and contaminant transport in unconfined aquifers. Unfortunately, measurements of actual recharge are not usually available causing recharge to be estimated or possibly added to the calibration procedure. In this study, differences between observed water-table elevations and water-table elevations simulated with a model based on the one-dimensional Boussinesq equation were used to identify both the timing and quantity of recharge to an alluvial valley aquifer. Observed water table elevations and river stage data were recorded during a five-year period from 1991 to 1995 at the Ohio Management Systems Evaluation Area located in south-central Ohio. Direct recharge attributed to overbank flow during and shortly after flood conditions accounted for 65 percent of the total recharge computed during the five-year study period. Recharge of excess infiltration to the aquifer was intermittent and occurred soon after large rainfall events and high river stage. Specification of constant recharge with time values in ground-water simulation models seems inappropriate for stream-aquifer systems given the strong influence of the river on water table elevations in these systems.

Notes: In situ stabilization of heavy metals in contaminated soils by the addition of various types of soil amendment is an attractive technique for remediation. We investigated the potential of three industrial by-products (phosphogypsum, red gypsum and dolomitic residue) for boosting the heavy metal sorption capacity of an acid soil (patents pending, Spanish applications no 200201704 and 200201375) by using sorption isotherm experiments. The three by-products were found substantially to increase the retention of lead, cadmium and copper on the solid components of the soil. The increase in lead retention of the soil horizons upon the addition of both phosphogypsum and red gypsum was dominated by the formation of anglesite minerals. The dolomitic residue increased the metal retention capacity of the soil horizons through the precipitation of laurionite-type minerals as well as cadmium and copper hydroxy-chlorides. In addition to the batch sorption study, we used scanning electron microscopy to investigate the metal sorption processes in the soil by the effect of the treatments. Lead was frequently found to be linked to the edge charges of kaolinite minerals. The three metals were found to be associated with organic matter in the Ap horizon treated with the three by-products. Finally, the three metals were found to be associated with undissolved dolomitic residue particles.

Notes: Infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) increases the risk of developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is a rare variant of diffuse large cell lymphoma that often involves the oral cavity of HIV+ patients. It is characterized by immunoblastic morphology and plasma cell phenotype. Cutaneous involvement in PBL appears to be rare. We report a 44-year-old man with AIDS and Kaposi sarcoma (KS) previously treated with doxorubicin who, following treatment with highly active antiretroviral therapy, developed an erythematous infiltrated nodule on the right arm. Histology showed subcutaneous fat necrosis and clusters of atypical large plasma cells (plasmablastic cells). Immunohistochemistry revealed λ light chain restriction. Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) mRNA was detected by in situ hybridization within the plasmablastic cells. Polymerase chain reaction amplification with specific primers for human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) performed on the skin biopsy specimen detected a specific band. A complete screening (bone marrow biopsy, computed tomographic scan, radiological survey) disclosed no abnormalities. The lesion resolved spontaneously after 3 months. Two years later an infiltrated plaque developed on the abdominal wall. The clinical and histopathological features of this new lesion were similar to those observed 2 years previously. No evidence of extracutaneous involvement was detected. The lesion again resolved spontaneously after 25 days. PBL may be seen in patients with transplants or receiving chemotherapy, but is usually observed in patients with advanced AIDS. The observation of recurrent self-healing EBV- and HHV-8-associated cutaneous monoclonal plasmablastic infiltrates, in a patient with AIDS and KS, expands the clinical spectrum of AIDS-associated plasmablastic lymphoproliferative disorders.

Notes: Class I and II histocompatibility antigen expression was studied in cryostat sections of biopsy tissues from 15 patients diagnosed as suffering from malignant melanoma, using monoclonal antibodies against HLA class I and II mono-morphic determinants and an indirect immunofluorescence technique. Class I antigens were detected in three of the four primary melanomas and in five of the eleven metastatic melanomas. Class II antigens were expressed only in metastatic melanomas, in three out of eleven cases. Some tumour cell suspensions were obtained and short-term cultures were established. Radiobinding and immunoprecipitation studies were carried out in two cases, named M6 and M8. The results were comparable to those obtained with direct immunofluorescence. We modulated the expression of class I and II HLA antigens with interferon in M6 when adapted to tissue culture. This melanoma was class I and II negative; after IFNγ treatment it became strongly positive for class I and II antigens. In addition we have demonstrated, using Southern blot analysis with the restriction enzymes PvuII and EcoRI, that the M6 melanoma does not have any detectable alterations in its class IIβ genes.

Notes: Abstract: Ciliated protozoa present in ten activated sludge plants at Madrid (Spain) were identified. The abundance of key groups of ciliates was determined at each plant; attached ciliates made up the most abundant and representative group. Multivariate statistical analysis was employed to study relationships between ciliates and both the physico-chemical and operational parameters of the plants. Partial correlation analysis revealed: (1) The indicator value of attached ciliates in assessing management and performance of the activated sludge process, (2) the relationship of swimming ciliates with short-aged sludges and lower quality effluents and (3) the direct association between swimming-crawling ciliates and bad settlement conditions of the sludge. Factor analysis showed the associations of the most frequent species of ciliates with the operational parameters of the plants, suggesting the indicator value of some of the species: Vorticella striata was related with poor quality of effluent; Aspidisca cicada with stable plant conditions, and Litonotus lamella with a deficiently settling sludge.

Notes: Summary Three points concerning the authors' studies on arterial spasms are reported.—1. Spasms of the internal cervical carotid artery are often transient and seem to react to adrenolytic drugs.—2. Experiments carried out on dogs show that intra-arterial injections of a mixture of drugs reputed to be vasodilatative may provoke arterial spasms.—3. Report of the occurence in one case of a diffuse spasm in the carotid system with diffuse dilatation of the venous system.

Notes: Summary The study of bone mass in experimental animals usually requires invasive techniques. Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) may be an alternative as a non-invasive method (1). Bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mineral content (BMC) of 62 vertebrae of Sprague Dawley rats (SDr) measured by DEXA densitometry were compared with histomorphometric bone volume measurements, and a statistically significant correlation was found (r=0.79 and 0.75, respectively, p〈0.001). In conclusion, DEXA is an accurate and feasible technique for the study of trabecular bone mass in SDr.
