    Notes: At least two pathotypes of Xanthomonas campestris pv. malvacearum are now known to exist in Sudan. The pre-Barakat (race 1) and post-Barakat (race 2) pathogens have been shown to exhibit different host specificity. The former is pathogenic and highly aggressive on only cultivars with no resistance genes or with the B2 and/or B3 resistance factors, while the latter can infect the B6 cultivars also. Race 2 in Sudan, which was previously reported to infect all the standard differentials, produced milder angular leaf spot symptoms and occasionally restricted vein infection. Moreover, it exhibited reduced growth in planta compared with race 1.Bacteriophage studies revealed that the two races are quite distinct in their phage sensitivity. Race 1 can be lysed by only three, or rarely four, of the six phages used for typing, while race 2 is sensitive to all of them. The present study suggests that phage 7 may be the type-determining phage for race 2. Race 2 strain mutants resistant to phage 3 or 4 were found to be sensitive to phage 7 and pathogenic to both Acala and Barakat, although showing marked attenuation of virulence. However, mutants resistant to phage 2 or 7 were insensitive to all the phages and although they retained their pathogenicity to Acala, they either lost the ability to infect Barakat or produced a hypersensitive reaction. The resistance of all mutants was found to be due to failure to adsorb the homologous phage, indicating a change in the cell wall. The association of this with the attenuation of virulence suggests that bacterial wall components may function as virulence determinants in Xanthomonas campestris pv. malvacearum.

    Notes: Summary 336 cerebral aneurysms were treated during the past 18 years. Amongst these, 30 patients harboured aneurysms in vertebro-basilar circulation and form the subject material to be analysed. 17 were non-surgically treated whilst 13 cases received surgical treatment. In the group of non-surgical treatment, 6 were found in a moribund stage on admission, 9 had rebled during hospitalization and died. 2 other patients with large or giant aneurysms were treated palliatively and conservatively. They still survived over 18 months. 12 aneurysms were surgically clipped and 1 was wraped with muscle. 2 of them died 1 week postoperatively due to pulmonary embolism. Risk factors are discussed. In contrast to the aneurysms of other circulatory territories vertebro-basilar aneurysms should be operated at the earliest possible opportunity; waiting does not provide an additional advantage to offset the risk of high mortality and morbidity after recurrent haemorrhage and vasospasm in this region.

    Notes: Summary Two cases of colloid cyst of the third ventricle are reported. Their computed tomographic (CT), magnetic resonance (MR) and neuropathological features are presented. The MR findings were different in the two cases for reasons not yet fully explained, full biochemical and biophysical analyses of the cyst contents not being available. Neuropathologically, the only significant difference was the abundant presence of cholesterin crystals in the colloid of case 1 and their absence in case 2. One of our cases is also peculiar from a CT point of view, since it was primarily hypodense and did not enhance on intravenous contrast administration.

    Notes: Abstract The present study was planned to assess the validity ofEnteromorpha intestinalis for an active biomonitoring of heavy metals in the Weser estuary. Exposure of cultured algae (active biomonitoring) was carried out in 1987 and 1988, simultaneouslyEnteromorpha spp. was collected from the banks (passive monitoring) in the estuary. Cd, Pb, Ni, Zn and Cu contents of exposed algae were higher than the metal content of collected algae. Metal contents of both collected and field algae varied significantly over space and time. Bioconcentration factors and results of linear regression analysis indicate, that the bioavailability of Cu and Ni varies with regard to the sampling location but cannot be calculated from heavy metal concentration in the water. Due to the different metal and species specific bioavailability, we want to stress the need to monitor contamination of organisms directly. An active biomonitoring usingE. intestinalis will establish a rationale to compare contamination of different estuaries.

    Notes: Abstract Combining the results of field observations from the Eider, Elbe, Weser and Ems estuaries and laboratory experiments it was found that: 1) in German North Sea estuaries the tidal freshwater reaches are the main habitat of the diatomActinocyclus normanii. 2) the residence time within the tidal freshwater reaches is a key factor controlling not only seasonal and spatial densities within one estuary, but also density differences between estuaries; 3) A. normanii is well adapted to strongly changing light situations and thus adapted to estuaries with high vertical turbulent mixing and low values of Zeu/Zmix; 4) the downstream limit of the habitat ofA. normanii is mainly determined by light limitation rather than by hyperosmotic stress.

    Notes: Abstract In 1989, three years after the disaster at Chernobyl, the Cesium (Cs-137 and Cs-134) activity of water, sediments, suspended solids, algae, and crustaceans were studied in five sections of the Weser estuary covering the nontidal and tidal freshwater region down to the brackish area. The total water activities in the freshwater regions are similar, but there are differences in the Cs distribution between the dissolved and the particulate phase depending on the concentration of suspended solids and abiotic water parameters. The Cs activity derived from Chernobyl is only detectable in sediments and suspended solids. Specific differences in Cs accumulation were found for crustaceans but not for algae.

    Notes: Abstract The tidal freshwater reaches of estuaries have received little attention in ecological research although they are often heavily stressed by environmental impacts. We have thus compiled published and previously unpublished data from the Weser Estuary, Germany. Physical, chemical and biological properties are described within the tidal freshwater reach and compared with the upstream (riverine) and downstream (mixohaline) habitats. The tidal freshwater region is different from riverine sites, mainly due to tidally induced physical processes such as prolonged residence time of the water, oscillating water levels and changing current velocities and directions. Distinctions from the mixohaline situation are mainly due to differences in salinity and particulate suspended matter concentration. It is thus possible to define the tidal freshwater reach of the Weser Estuary as a separate biotope with a specific community structure. The phyto- and zooplankton is a mixture of riverine and autochthonous species whereas marine species are almost completely lacking. In the macroinvertebrate component, as well as in the fish community, marine and riverine species are combined with autochthonous species. This is probably typical for the tidal freshwater reaches of many river dominated coastal plain estuaries. We conclude that the tidal freshwater reaches are an important site of physical, chemical and biological processes which may alter riverine input considerably before it reaches the freshwater-seawater interface. For a better understanding of the ecological functioning of estuaries, it is essential to include these areas within estuarine research programmes.
