Notes: Abstract Free and Ca-alginate-immobilized cells of Penicillium raistrickii i 477 were used for 15α-hydroxylation of 13-ethyl-gon-4-en-3,17-dione. The product formation in the presence of β-cyclodetrin, in comparison with reactions carried out in the presence of methanol. Application of β-cyclodextrin led to increasing solubility of the steroid substrate. The fungus was able to utilize β-cyclodextrin as a carbon source.

Notes: Abstract Trametes versicolor was shown to produce extracellular laccase during surface cultivation on glucose, wheat straw and beech wood. Growth on both wheat straw and beech wood led to an increase as high as 3.5-fold in extracellular laccase activity, in comparison with growth on glucose. The corresponding yields in fungal biomass reached only about 20% of the value obtained on glucose. Manganese peroxidase activity␣appeared during growth on wheat straw and beech wood. Mycelia grown on glucose, wheat straw and beech wood also showed intracellular laccase activities, monitored with 2,6-dimethoxyphenol, 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid), 4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxybenzaldehyde azine (syringaldazine) and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (l-DOPA). Assaying intracellular laccase with 2,6-dimethoxyphenol, syringaldazine and l-DOPA showed the maximum oxidation rates to be at pH values different from those producing maximum oxidation rates with extracellular laccase. In each case most of the total laccase activity was recovered from the culture filtrates. Growth on wheat straw and beech wood led to increased values for both extra- and intracellular laccase activities, based on fungal dry weight, in comparison with growth on glucose.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary This paper deals with the role of mixed venous pO2 in cardiac and respiratory control. Hypoxemia which was confined to the right heart and to the pulmonary artery has been produced by injection of sodium dithionite (Na2S2O4) in the V. cava just before the right heart. The dithionite injection (5 ml/min) increased the oxygen uptake by 60%. 8 unanesthesized goats were studied in 22 experiments. Oxygen uptake, blood pressure, ventilation, cardiac output and blood gas composition have been determined before and during the sodium dithionite injection. The cardiac output was increased by 50%, the ventilation by 70% during the sodium dithionite injection. The change of oxygen and carbon dioxide concentration and pressure in the arterial blood were so small, that the activity of the arterial chemoreceptors most likely remained unchanged during the procedure. It has been, therefore, concluded, that the oxygen tension in the mixed venous blood is a controlling factor of cardiac output and ventilation.

Notes: Summary The frequency of Sudeck's syndrome following trauma of the distal end of the radius and the wrist varies according to the subjective definition of the syndrome. The strict classification in three stages is abandoned and more emphasis is laid on the fluctuating clinical symptomatology and the degree of severity. Trauma is the predominant etiological factor, and recent experiments indicate the importance of neural irritation in the pathogenesis. After a description of the symptomatology, the prophylatic and therapeutic procedures which have proved effective in experiments and clinical experience are discussed.

Notes: Summary Pulmonary function studies and blood gas analyses under air and oxygen breathing were performed in 56 patients before upper abdominal laparotomies as well as on the 2nd and 7th postoperative days. Patients were grouped according to sex, postoperative pulmonary complications and type of abdominal incisions. The most striking results were a postoperative restrictive respiratory disturbance of considerable extent combined with a decrease of arterial pO2. However, there was no significant ostructive respiratory disturbance present. The cause of the respiratory disturbance is discussed in detail. Pulmonary complications as manifested on x-ray on the 3rd postoperative day were found to be equally frequent in male and female patients, their frequency being higher in gastric resections than in biliary tract operations. The type of upper abdominal incision did not influence the extent of postoperative pulmonary complications.
