Notes: The Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) completed the divertor modification of the JAERI Tokamak-60 Upgrade (JT-60U) [Y. Koide and the JT-60 Team, Phys. Plasmas 4, 1623 (1997)] in June, 1997, and experiments with the W-shaped pumped divertor have been carried out. The helium exhaust was demonstrated in the steady state by using helium neutral beam injection (NBI). The ratio of the effective particle confinement time of helium to the energy confinement time, τHe*/τE, became about 4 and the obtained enrichment factor of helium in the divertor was about 1. The high confinement mode (H-mode) plasma with edge localized mode (ELM) was sustained for 9 s with a confinement–enhancement factor (H factor) of ∼1.7. No increase of recycling and carbon impurity density was observed with the integrated NBI input energy of 203 MJ. In the reversed shear (RS) experiments, a quasi-steady-state ELMy H mode was achieved with an H factor ∼2.4. The stability of high-n toroidal drift modes was analyzed in the RS plasma. The E×B shearing rate became of the same order of magnitude as the linear growth of the dominant mode around the internal transport barrier. The semiglobal structure of radial transport was analyzed by the toroidal geometry particle simulation code. The discontinuity in the electrostatic potential occurred at the qmin region and radial transport was reduced. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The ion temperature and toroidal rotation velocity with high time resolution (τ∼1 ms) using charge exchange spectroscopy in JT-60U tokamak plasma have been measured. The method uses three interference filters that have slightly different peak wavelengths. These filters are selected according to the ion temperature and rotation velocity expected at the measured position. The system with a time resolution of 1 ms was applied to the analysis of fast plasma phenomena. As an example, the time evolution of the C VI ion temperature and toroidal rotation velocity across the L–H transition has been measured. The toroidal rotation at a normalized minor radius (r/a=0.3) increases gradually after the L–H transition, while that at the edge changes from a speed of 5 km/s before the transition to −40 km/s after the transition within a time of 5–10 ms. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A detailed in situ study by infrared phase-modulated ellipsometry of interfaces between plasma-deposited amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) and silicon nitride (a-SiNx) is presented. The structure of the interface is affected by the deposition sequence. A behavior compatible with a sharp interface is observed when a-SiNx is deposited on top of a-Si:H, the underlayer material being very weakly influenced by the deposition of the overlayer. In contrast, a graded transition is observed when a-SiNx is deposited first. In the latter case, the infrared measurements directly reveal a nitrogen tail incorporated in the first monolayers of a-Si:H (10–20 A(ring) thick). The formation mechanisms of the interfaces are discussed.

Notes: An in situ investigation of the a-Si:H-a-SiO2 interfaces by infrared phase modulated ellipsometry is presented. 20–30-A(ring)-thick intermixing layers are clearly revealed at the interface whatever the deposition sequence. In particular, the presence of SiO and (O)SiHn bonds in the first monolayers of the growth of the "top'' a-Si:H is identified. Likewise a hydrogen accumulation, revealed by SiH vibrations, is observed during the early stage of the growth of a-SiO2 on top of a-Si:H. The nature of the a-Si:H-a-SiO2 and a-Si:H-a-SiNx interfaces is compared.

Notes: The inverse Smith–Purcell effect is a candidate for laser-driven linacs utilizing the interaction between laser light and an electron beam traveling just in front of a metallic grating. We have performed experiments to study electron energy spread as a function of electron beam position above the grating. A submillimeter wave laser (CH3F, 496 μm) is used as a driving source. It is found that the energy spread characteristics show exponential decay of the interaction strength (field intensity) in the direction perpendicular to the grating surface, as a classical theory on the effect predicts.

Notes: The effect of streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus on histopathological changes in tissues bearing masticatory pressure exerted through an experimental denture base has been studied in animal specimens. Experimental dentures, which prescribed the masticatory pressure by the amount of subsidence of the denture base (100, 50 or 13 μm), were constructed for the hard palate of the molar regions of rats. It was revealed that streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus (1) weakened the intercellular junctions in the epithelium and gradually enhanced this state with time, (2) lessened the atrophic and proliferative reactions in the epithelial ridge and prolonged their appearance period, (3) enhanced the compression of lamina propria mucosae and prolonged the appearance period of this reaction, (4) enhanced the inflammatory change and extended its appearance period, (5) lowered the threshold for the inflammatory reaction induced by the masticatory pressure, (6) increased the number of osteoclasts and prolonged the period of their presence, (7) lowered the threshold for osteoclastic bone resorption induced by the masticatory pressure, (8) inhibited the appearance of osteoblasts following the disappearance of osteoclasts and (9) accelerated the decline rate of masticatory pressure exerted to the denture supporting tissues. Therefore, it can be concluded that the streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus in the animals tested deteriorated the tolerance of the denture supporting tissues to masticatory pressure.

Notes: The effect of calcium supplementation on the bone dynamics in the hard palate of the molar region (maxilla), mandible and proximal tibia in experimental osteoporotic rats was examined. Ninety ovariectomized (OVX) and 45 sham-OVX Wistar female rats were used in this study. All the rats received surgical operation at 6 weeks of age. Ovariectomized rats were fed on a low calcium diet (0·02%) for 12 weeks post-operation, and then randomly divided into the two following groups. One group was fed on high calcium diet (2·30%) (OVX-HCa) and the other group was remained on the low calcium diet (OVX-LCa). Sham-OVX rats were fed on regular calcium diet (1·15%) during the experimental period (Sham-OVX). Histomorphological analysis was carried out from 12 to 32 weeks post-operation. On undecalcified thin section, bone volume, eroded surface, osteoid surface and bone formation rate were calculated for cortical bone of the maxilla, and for cancellous bone of the mandible and proximal tibia. In the OVX-LCa group, compared with the Sham-OVX group, decrease of the bone volume and increase of the bone resorption and formation parameters were detected throughout the observation periods. In the OVX-HCa group, compared with the OVX-LCa group, increase of the bone volume and temporarily increased parameters of bone formation at 1 week after feeding on high calcium diet were observed in the maxilla, but these changes were not observed in the mandible and proximal tibia. Moreover, the bone resorption and formation parameters in the maxilla, mandible and proximal tibia in the OVX-HCa group became equivalent to the Sham-OVX levels with the passage of time.

Notes: The purpose of this study was to investigate bone dynamics in denture supporting tissue under continuous pressure in the diabetic condition by using bone histomorphometry in relation to initial intensity of continuous pressure exerted through the denture base. The experimental denture base, which was designed to load initial continuous pressure of 0·0, 1·0, 10·0 or 20·0 kPa to the denture supporting tissue, was applied to the molar region of hard palate of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Fluorescent labelled palatal bone tissue was stained with Villanueva bone stain and was prepared for the undecalcified grinding section. In 0·0 kPa group, no bone resorption was observed and bone formation was transiently inhibited after the denture insertion. In 1·0 kPa group, although no bone resorption was observed, the beginning of bone formation after the inhibition of bone formation was later than that in 0·0 kPa group and bone formation dynamics after the resumption of bone formation was similar to that in 0·0 kPa group. In 10·0 and 20·0 kPa groups, bone resorption was observed until 3 and 4 weeks, respectively, and the amount of bone resorption for each group was 60 ± 16 and 87 ± 18 μm, respectively. The resumption of bone formation in 10·0 and 20·0 kPa groups were observed at the same stage with 1·0 kPa group, and the bone formation dynamics after the resumption of bone formation in 10·0 and 20·0 kPa groups were also similar to that in 0·0 kPa group. From the results of this study, it was revealed that bone formation following bone resorption did not cause equivalent recovery of the bone surface level to the level observed in the case without bone resorption in the diabetic condition.
