Notes: Raman scattering was applied to a study of collective plasmon–LO phonon excitations polarized normal to the layers in strongly coupled GaAs/AlAs and δ-doped GaAs superlattices. Thus, the corresponding (vertical) motion of electrons and their localization were studied and compared in both types of superlattices. The localization of the collective excitations caused by the localization of the electrons at the top of the miniband was found in the GaAs/AlAs superlattices. Much stronger localization effects were observed in the δ-doped structures than in the GaAs/AlAs superlattices. Our results reveal evidence of the formation of a miniband structure in the δ-doped structures even in the case of complete localization of electrons inside one period. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The plasmon-longitudinal optical phonon vibrational modes in heavily doped GaAs/AlAs superlattices were analyzed both with Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectroscopies. The modes polarized in the direction normal to the layers were observed in the infrared spectra, while the Raman spectra revealed those modes polarized along the layers. The experimental results allowed us to derive the dispersion relations of the electrons in both directions and these relations were found to be in good agreement with the miniband dispersions calculated in the envelope function approximation when both Γ and X conduction electron states were taken into account. No evidence of the contribution of the two-dimensional electron states to the vertical transport was found. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An insertion sequence (IS901), found in pathogenic strains of Mycobacterium avium, but absent in M. avium complex isolates from patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), has been isolated and sequenced. This insertion element has a nucleotide sequence of 1472 bp, with one open reading frame (0RF1), which codes for a protein of 401 amino acids. The amino acid sequence, terminal ends and target site of IS901 are similar to those of IS900, present in Mycobacterium paratuberculosis. However, the DNA sequences of these two IS elements exhibit only 60% homology, compared to a DNA homology of 98% between their respective hosts. IS901, like IS900, appears to belong to a family of related insertion elements present in actinomycetes and other bacteria. M. avium strains containing IS900 were found to be more virulent in mice than closely related strains lacking IS901. IS901 may be a useful tool for the study of the genetics of virulence in the M. avium complex and for obtaining stable integration of foreign genes into mycobacteria.

Notes: A quantitative peroxidase assay using tetramethylbenzidine was applied to exudates from peritoneal cavities of rainbow trout which had been inflamed by intraperitoneal injection of Yersinia ruckeri. Most of the peroxidase activity was cell-associated, with values for extracellular peroxidase below 5% of total peroxidase. No free peroxidase activity was detected in resting cavities. The kinetics of neutrophil numbers and peroxidase activity in peritoneal exudates during the 6 days of inflammation studied followed identical patterns, with a correlation coefficient of 0.996. This shows that the peroxidase assay can be used as an indirect, quantitative evaluation of neutrophil responses during peritoneal inflammation.

Notes: The development of non-specific immunosuppression during the infection of different strains of mice with three mycobacterial species was evaluated by studying the immune response to a heterologous antigen (sheep red blood cells) and comparing it with the induction of non-specific resistance to a Listeria monocytogenes challenge. It was shown that early (at 15 days) immunosuppression developed in Mycobacterium avium-susceptible mouse strains infected with a high inoculum dose [2.5 ± 106 colony forming units (CFU)] of virulent M. avium but not in resistant mice infected with a similar inoculum nor in susceptible mice infected by a smaller inoculum dose (2.5 ± 106 CFU). In the latter case it developed only during the second month of infection and was of smaller magnitude. An inoculum of M. avium of attenuated virulence did not induce immunosuppression. M. lepraemurium induced a late immunosuppression, which occurred when extensive bacterial proliferation had already taken place. The non-pathogenic M. bovis BCG induced immunosuppression in C57BL/6 mice. The results do not establish a correlation between the development of generalized immunosuppression and susceptibility to infection. It could be seen that the early immunosuppression was observed in those situations where there was extensive macrophage activation as shown by the development of non-specific resistance to a listeria challenge. The late immunosuppression was observed when bacterial proliferation was extensive.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die substituierten 3-Anilino-1,5-diphenylpyrazole1a–i wurden mit Pb(OAc)4 in Benzol oder CH2Cl2 oxidiert.
Notes: Summary Substituted 3-anilino-1,5-diphenylpyrazoles1a–i were oxidized with Pb(OAc)4 in benzene or CH2Cl2 solution. The ESR measurements confirmed the formation of aminyl radicals3f–i frompara-CH3 substituted pyrazoles1f–i. The radical intermediates from unsubstituted pyrazoles1a–e were assigned to triarylaminium cation radicals These were generated by consecutive oxidation of the dimeric products4a–e whose structure was proven by NMR spectroscopy and15N labeling.

Notes: Abstract Mitochondrial diseases result from structural, biochemical or genetic defects of mitochondria, which contain the respiratory chain. They usually affect children and young adults. We report the CT and MRI findings in 17 patients under 14 years of age, the youngest reported to date, with various mitochondrial diseases. Although imaging studies may be normal negative in the early stages, follow-up usually shows many abnormalities, which depend on clinical status and the disease. We have recognised a spectrum of findings that can be divided into four patterns: nonspecific myelin lesions (8/17); grey-matter nuclei involvement (6/17); a leukodystrophic pattern; and calcification of the brain (1/17), although mixed forms, particularly myelin and grey-matter lesions are frequent.
