    Notes: CuInSe2 was studied in the as-grown state and after low-temperature (4 K) 2 MeV electron irradiation. The positron bulk lifetime of 235 ps was measured for the unirradiated sample. The positron bulk lifetime was theoretically calculated and is in good agreement with the experimental value. In addition, the defect-related lifetimes for mono-, di-, and trivacancies are theoretically determined. An increased average positron lifetime indicated after electron irradiation the appearance of open-volume defects, most probably of divacancy type. The disappearance of this defect was observed during annealing below 250 K. Other defects were formed leading to a divacancy signal at least stable up to 600 K in the temperature range above 450 K. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract.  Monte-Carlo simulations of positron diffusion are carried out for powders consisting of spherical and ellipsoidal particles with and without defects. Following Bergersen et al. [1], elastic positron–phonon interaction is considered to be dominant for scattering processes in positron diffusion. The central question is which fraction of the positrons would be able to reach the particle boundaries. Hence, we calculate the Fraction of Positrons reaching particle Surface (FPS). The presence of defects in the particles can drastically reduce FPS depending on the defect concentration and capture rate. We demonstrate that for small-grained materials the grain surface can influence the lifetime signal significantly.

    Notes: Abstract We consider the specific problem of the influence of an inhomogeneous distribution of defects in solids on positron annihilation characteristics. In detail, we investigate the effect of micro-structure, i.e. dislocations, vacancies, vacancy clusters, grain and subgrain boundaries, pores or inner surfaces, on positron lifetime spectroscopy. Only few materials show such small grain sizes that positron annihilation is affected. One example are powder compacts, made out of small and fine-grained powder, during different stages of the sintering process. All samples generically show positron trapping at grain boundaries (τGB ≈ 300 ps) and at surfaces (τsurf = 500–600 ps). τGB = 300 ps corresponds to small voids consisting of roughly eight vacancies. Different defects can lead to similar annihilation parameters. Hence, we compare the lifetime data obtained from porous and fine-grained samples to the kinetics of defect annealing after irradiation and plastic deformation, e.g. the thermal stability of dislocations or vacancy clusters. We conclude that τGB ≈ 300 ps is apparently not related to vacancy clusters in the matrix, but is due to positron trapping at large-angle grain boundaries. This large open volume is in contrast to common grain boundary models. The change of porosity and grain size with temperature, i.e. during sintering, has been determined in a correlated study by metallography and X-ray line-profile analysis. The effective powder particle size ranges from ≈0.5 to ≈15 μm, while the grain sizes are always smaller. The only detectable lattice defects in all samples above recrystallization temperature are grain boundaries, besides a surface component in very fine powders.

    Notes: Abstract We investigate the changes in the microstructure on a nano-scale (nano-structure) in technically used AlCuMg 2024 alloys. We show how the annihilation parameters, i.e. the positron lifetimes and corresponding intensities, are changing during natural and artificial aging. It turns out that positron annihilation spectroscopy is very sensitive to changes occurring in the nano-structure but which are not always reflected or measurable in the materials properties such as hardness. The detected changes in the positron lifetime, corresponding to trapping at precipitations, indicate transport of copper atoms through the aluminum matrix to the precipitations. Multi-component spectra for very long aging times indicate that the distances between the trapping centers have increased. This means that the precipitations grow in size, while their number decreases.

    Notes: Summary. The norepinephrine transporter (NET) plays a critical role in brain norepinephrine homeostasis and is a target for antidepressants and drugs of abuse. We have analyzed the 5'flanking regulatory region of the human NET gene (SLC6A2). Primer extension and 5' RACE revealed a single transcription start site, alternative splicing of exon 1 due to alternate splice donor usage, and a variable splice acceptor of intron 1. A TA-rich motif 35 bp upstream of the transcription start and several potential binding sites for transcription factors including a cAMP response element (CRE)-like motif are present in the 5'-flanking region. A 4.0-kb fragment, which had been fused to the luciferase reporter gene and transiently expressed in a NET+ cell line, displayed both constitutive and inducible promoter activity. Functional analysis by serial deletions revealed several clusters of cell-selective enhancer elements. Our findings indicate that (1) the NET gene promoter is active in NET-expressing cells and the information contained within ∼4 kb of the 5'-flanking sequence is required to confer its cell-selective expression, (2) the expression of NET is regulated by a combination of positive cis-acting elements operating through a basal promoter defined by a TA-rich motif, and (3) the promoter responds to cAMP-dependent induction. Fusion of the human NET gene promoter to selected genes will facilitate their cell-selective expression in gene transfer strategies.
