Notes: In order to investigate their possible role as prognostic markers, staining with the antibodies NKI/C-3 and anti-S100, that are applicable on paraffin sections, was examined using a group of primary cutaneous melanomas and autologous metastases using the immunoperoxidase procedure. All melanoma lesions stained with anti-S100, and the large majority with NKI/C-3. In primary melanomas showing a moderate or dense associated lymphocytic infiltrate, significantly more tumour cells stained with anti-S100 than in primary melanomas with a slight or absent infiltrate. In markedly pigmented metastases, significantly more tumour cells stained with NKI/C-3 than in less pigmented lesions; in primary melanomas this phenomenon just failed to be significant. In metastases with a high mitotic index a significantly lower proportion of tumour cells stained with NKI/C-3 than in lesions with a low mitotic index. No significant differences in staining were found between a group of primary melanomas with metastases and a group without metastases within a follow-up period of 5 years. Therefore, although staining with NKI/C-3 and anti-S100 appears to be associated with certain histopathological characteristics, it has no direct contribution to the assessment of prognosis in primary melanoma.

Notes: Summary In a series of 105 cases of aneurysmal bone cyst, 18 showed an unusually high level of mitotic activity and/or increased nuclear pleomorphism which complicated the differential diagnosis with respect to telangiectatic osteosarcoma. An attempt was made to use semi-automatized morphometric and histophotometric techniques to establish objective morphological differences between these unusual cases of aneurysmal bone cyst and 16 cases of telangiectatic osteosarcoma. Three cases (two of aneurysmal bone cyst and one of telangiectatic osteosarcoma) proved unsuitable for analysis. In 24 of the remaining 31 cases (77%) a computerized discriminant analysis permitted correct discrimination with a high degree of certainty on the basis of quantitative nuclear characteristics determined in paraffin sections. In the other 7 cases the diagnosis was less certain (3), doubtful (2) or erroneous (2). The relevant nuclear characteristics were (in ascending sequence of discrimination): the largest nuclear surface area, the mitotic index, and the percentage of nuclear sections exceeding an arbitrarily chosen limit of 60 Μ2. The criterion of nuclear size for discrimination between these benign and malignant lesions could be applied for two reasons: firstly, because a group of extremely large nuclei occur in malignant cases, and secondly, because the average nuclear size is larger in malignant than in benign lesions. The extremely large nuclei occur as only a small percentage of the total nuclear population. The other variables investigated, i.e., cellularity and nuclear contour ratio, did not contribute greatly to the differentiation. In 11 cases, the average nuclear Feulgen extinction was estimated as an additional variable.

Notes: Summary A case of traumatic lumbar meningoceles at four levels in combination with total and partial nerve root avulsion and with perservation of a nerve root is reported. Several diagnostic imaging techniques (myelography, CT, myelo-CT and MRI) are compared and their value in demonstrating the continuity of the nerve roots is discussed. MRI could assess the continuity of a nerve root in a traumatic meningocele, not demonstrable by myelography or myelo-CT. The combination of myelography, myelo-CT and MRI is likely to provide a complete diagnostic evaluation of nerve root lesions.

Notes: Summary We found that the distribution of the lipophilic chemotherapeutic agento,p′-DDD (mitotane) among serum (lipo)proteins was altered in hypertriglyceridemia, with relatively moreo,p′-DDD accumulating in the chylomicron and very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) fraction. Intralipid, an artificial chylomicron emulsion, or isolated VLDL could extracto,p′-DDD from the other serum (lipo)proteins. There was an inverse relationship between the relative amount ofo,p′-DDD found in the fraction exhibiting a density of 〈1.006 g/ml (chylomicrons plus VLDL) and the relative amount observed in the LDL or HDL fractions of serum. Our results indicate that hypertriglyceridemia may impede the entry ofo,p′-DDD into the brain or the adrenals. For therapeutic monitoring ofo,p′-DDD levels in severe hypertriglyceridemia, we recommend that the chylomicron and VLDL fraction first be removed from the serum by ultracentrifugation.

Notes: Summary Of a total study group of 99 patients 56 received intrapleural BCG in three different dosages (5 patients 16×106, 25 patients 32×106, and 26 patients 64×106 culturable particles) following resection treatment for lung cancer. This study group was compared with an historical control population, very closely matched with regard to age, sex, stage of disease, histology and type of operation. Although the clinical condition of the patients selected for BCG treatment was above average, no survival benefit ensued from the intrapleural BCG. On the contrary, disease-free survival in BCG receivers with stage I and II squamous cell carcinoma was shortened significantly at 2 years follow-up due to the earlier appearance of local recurrences, with the same tendency still present after 5 years. This observation suggests an enhancement of tumour growth by the intrapleural BCG treatment. This alarming phenomenon could be a warning to clinicians when planning clinical immunotherapy trials to be aware of the potentially deleterious effects of such treatment.

Notes: Summary Dopamine beta-hydroxylase (DBH) enzyme activity was associated in rat superior cervical ganglion with tetrameric DBH-A (294,000 D) and dimeric DBH-B (147,000 D) and in rat adrenal gland with DBH-A and a novel molecular form of DBH, defined as DBH-C, with a molecular weight of 125,000 D. Pretreatment of the rats with cycloheximide markedly reduced DBH activity without altering the molecular heterogeneity.

Notes: Summary An indirect immunofluorescence assay is described which specifically detects antibodies against cervical carcinoma-associated membrane antigens. Cells from the ME-180 cervical carcinoma cell line were used as target cells. Sera had to be absorbed with pooled tonsillar lymphocytes prior to use, to remove nonspecific antibodies. The antibody was detected in 61 of 74 patients (82%) with invasive squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix and in 5 of 65 controls (8%). A group of 49 patients with early or preneoplastic stages of this tumor (microinvasive carcinoma, carcinome-in-situ, and dysplasia) did not differ from the control group in the incidence of the antibody (5 of 49 patients, 10%). It is concluded that the occurrence of this antibody is specific for cervical carcinoma (P〈0.001). However, the assay cannot be used as a diagnostic marker for preneoplastic stages of this tumor.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Ossification of the transverse atlantoid ligament (TAL) is rare. A few cases have been reported by Wackenheim and Dietemann and others. Calcification of the TAL has also been seen in calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate deposition disease. It is important to differentiate this condition from traumatic lesions of the dens axis.
