Notes: Randomly scattered depth profiles of refractive index are experimentally observed on thin silicon dioxide films on silicon substrates by means of conventional ellipsometry and gradually chemical etching. Computer simulations with an abrupt model and random uncertainties in ellipsometric angles Ψ and Δ show very similar behavior as experiments, and the distribution of the measured profile in the near interface region is in good agreement with 0.02° standard deviation in Ψ. Simulations also indicate that even very small errors in Ψ, as small as 0.001°, can result in divergent depth profile of the refractive index in the near interface region. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The frequency dependent capacitance of semiconductor-electrolyte junction and its relationship to the surface roughness of the semiconductor and the ions in the electrolyte are discussed. Due to very low mobility of the ions, the observed capacitance can be dominated by the Helmholtz double-layer of the electrolyte rather than the space charge layer of the semiconductor. The capacitance will also depend on the frequency. This, often observed power-law frequency dependence of capacitance is ascribed to the contribution of constant phase angle impedance. The power-law exponent can easily be related to the fractal dimension if the semiconductor surface can be described by fractal geometry.

Notes: Abstract Six doubled-haploid (DH) lines, derived by anther culture from octoploid triticale x wheat hybrids, were characterized using cytological, biochemical and molecular techniques. Lines varied in their wheat and rye genome composition, and were either wheat-rye chromosome multiple addition lines or had spontaneous substitutions and/or wheat-rye translocations. Most of the lines contained a pair of 4R chromosomes, whereas 1R or 7R were present in others. The results are similar to those previously obtained with hexaploid triticale x wheat crosses and indicate that it is possible to produce alien (wheat/rye) addition, substitution, and translocation lines directly from the anther culture of intergeneric hybrids.

Notes: Abstract Two novel 46-chromosome doubled haploid lines, W66 and M17, derived from separate hexaploid triticale x bread wheat crosses, were characterised using cytological and biochemical markers. Both lines were shown to be relatively stable cytologically, over 11 and 8 generations of selfing, respectively. By examining mitotic and meiotic chromosomes, the stabilities of the two lines were shown to be similar with frequencies of 2n=46 in 74.2–85.5% of cells. However, over selfed generations, the rye chromosomes were shown to have lost some of their heterochromatin, which made it difficult to establish their continued presence using cytological techniques, such as C-banding alone. Cytological evidence from pairing studies, C-banding, and fluorescence in-situ hybridization, showed that both M17 and W66 are wheat/rye multi-addition lines with rye chromosome constitutions of 1R+6R, and 1R+4R, respectively. These conclusions were confirmed by isozyme and storage-protein analysis.

Notes: Summary Heptaploid hybrids between octoploid triticale and wheat were backcrossed as female parents with wheat to examine the rye chromosome distribution in the resultant progenies using genomic in situ hybridization (GISH). One hundred and one backcross (BC) seeds were examined and whole rye chromosome additions and substitutions, wheat/rye centric and noncentric translocations and rye telocentric chromosomes were detected. Dicentric wheat/rye translocated chromosomes were also observed. Comparisons were made with previous results on the rye chromosome distribution from male gametes of the same cross and differences were found, where in the female derived population a deficit of plants with more than two rye chromosomes was apparent relative to the anther derived population.

Notes: Summary Within the cytoplasm of NPC tumor cells Corona virus like particles have been described earlier. Controlling immunfluorescent studies using anti-Corona-rabbit serum revealed the antigen localization within the tumor cell cytoplasm. Vice versa the blood sera from NPC-patients reveal significatively higher Corona antibody titers than blood sera from other than NPC-patients. The results open the theory that next to the well known EBV-infection the Corona virus infection plays an important role in NPC tumor biology. The question remains open whether there is an interacting function between a RNA-virus infection (Corona) and a DNA-virus infection (EBV) in nasopharyngeal carcinoma.
