Summary After intravenous injection of India ink in rats phagocytizing lymphocytes more than phagocytizing monocytes and granulocytes appeared in the blood. Up to 50% of the large, 30% of the medium-sized and 3% of the small lymphocytes had ingested carbon particles. The maximum of phagocytosis in lymphocytes was found 1–4 days after injection of India ink. Some ink-labelled lymphocytes were still observed after three weeks. The phagocytizing lymphocytes showed without exception a pale cytoplasma. Lymphocytes with a deep basophilic cytoplasma did not phagocytize. Cytological and histological studies revealed a massive phagocytosis in lymphocytes and reticulo-endothelial cells of the spleen, a less marked phagocytosis in lymphocytes and other cells of the bone marrow and practically no phagocytosis in the lymph nodes and the thymus. After splenectomy the number of phagocytizing lymphocytes was markedly diminished. These findings show the important role of the spleen in the phagocytosis by lymphocytes.
Notes:
