Notes: Dyed sulfonated polystyrene spheres (83 nm diameter) self-assemble into regular crystalline arrays that Bragg diffract visible light. Absorption of high intensity radiation (〉25 W/cm2) by the dye results in a local compression of the crystalline array due to local heating. The Kossel ring pattern is used to probe the variation in the lattice parameter and the dynamics of the thermally induced compression. The thermally induced compression derives from the negative temperature dependence of the interparticle interaction potential.

Notes: In this article, we report our investigations on the doping effect metallic Ag on the intergrain magnetoresistance phenomenon. La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 (LSMO) thin films with Ag doping were prepared on (001) LaAlO3 at different substrate temperatures (Ts) by the dual-beam pulsed-laser deposition technique. Grown at Ts=750 °C, the films are perfectly epitaxial with their c axis perpendicular to the film surface. Ag dopant cannot substitute into the LSMO lattice, thus showing no obvious effect on the magnetotransport properties of the film, though it did impair the film in-plane epitaxy and improve the intergrain diffusion of the lattice atoms. However, grown at lower Ts(400 °C), the films are granular with c-axis texture. The Ag dopant exists at GBs and helps to increase the local Mn spin disorder at GBs and the phase interfaces, thus enhancing the eMR value by a factor of 2 compared with the undoped film. Experiment data also suggest that the transport mechanism underlying the Ag-doping enhanced eMR is spin-dependent scattering. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A new mode of 0°–360° bistable twisted nematic (BTN) liquid crystal display is developed by using a parameter space method. This new mode possesses a large dΔn value that provides a possibility of using a 4.8–7 μm cell gap and a 6.5 V operating voltage for the new 0°–360° BTN cells. The high-contrast ratios above 80 within −80°–80° viewing-angle ranges are obtained experimentally in a horizontal direction, and the highest contrast ratio achieved is up to 250. In the contrast ratio, the experiment's results concur with the simulation results. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Barium hexaferrite (BaM) thin films were deposited on (0001) LiTaO3 substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Effects of the substrate temperature and oxygen gas pressure on the formation and quality of these films were studied. Films deposited at a substrate temperature of 800 °C and an oxygen pressure around 0.23 mbar showed the best c axis normal to the film plane with locked in-plane orientation. The saturation magnetization Ms and anisotropy field Ha measured by vibrating sample magnetometer were almost the same as those reported on bulk barium ferrite. Decreasing oxygen pressure hinders the formation of the Ba layer in BaM magnetoplumbite structure and gives rise to the spinel phase, which greatly decreases coercivity Hc of the films and finally destroys the whole BaM structure. Effects of the lattice mismatch and substrate-induced strains on the film structure were also studied. It was found that barium ferrite thin films grown on LiTaO3 substrates tend to choose a matching mode with compressional strains rather than shear strains. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Operation regimes, plasma parameters, and applications of the low-frequency (∼500 kHz) inductively coupled plasma (ICP) sources with a planar external coil are investigated. It is shown that highly uniform, high-density (ne∼9×1012 cm−3) plasmas can be produced in low-pressure argon discharges with moderate rf powers. The low-frequency ICP sources operate in either electrostatic (E) or electromagnetic (H) regimes in a wide pressure range without any Faraday shield or an external multipolar magnetic confinement, and exhibit high power transfer efficiency, and low circuit loss. In the H mode, the ICP features high level of uniformity over large processing areas and volumes, low electron temperatures, and plasma potentials. The low-density, highly uniform over the cross-section, plasmas with high electron temperatures and plasma and sheath potentials are characteristic to the electrostatic regime. Both operation regimes offer great potential for various plasma processing applications. As examples, the efficiency of the low-frequency ICP for steel nitriding and plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition of hydrogenated diamond-like carbon (DLC) films, is demonstrated. It appears possible to achieve very high nitriding rates and dramatically increase micro-hardness and wear resistance of the AISI 304 stainless steel. It is also shown that the deposition rates and mechanical properties of the DLC films can be efficiently controlled by selecting the discharge operating regime. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The series expansion of the plasma fields and currents in vector spherical harmonics has been demonstrated to be an efficient technique for solution of nonlinear problems in spherically bounded plasmas. Using this technique, it is possible to describe the nonlinear plasma response to the rotating high-frequency magnetic field applied to the magnetically confined plasma sphere. The effect of the external magnetic field on the current drive and field configuration is studied. The results obtained are important for continuous current drive experiments in compact toruses. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We systematically studied the dependencies of substrate temperature, laser fluence, deposition time, ambient gas pressure and laser frequency on the structural and magnetic properties of Nd–Fe–B thin films synthesized by pulsed-laser deposition at high substrate temperature Ts. A coercive force of 2.0–2.4 kOe was obtained on samples with a thickness of 70–90 nm and an average grain size of 50–70 nm grown at Ts of 620–650 °C. We showed a clear trend through statistical analysis that the coercivity decreases with increasing film thickness up to 800 nm due to an increase in the crystalline grain size. Oxidation layer and defects on the grain surface may also have greatly reduced the nucleation field and thus resulted in a low coercivity and low saturation magnetization of the samples. Comparison of the films made by PLD and sputtering under similar conditions has been discussed. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A π/2 and 5π/2 twist bistable nematic liquid crystal cell is optimized in optics by a parameter space approach. The cell possesses good contrast ratio, a preferable dΔn value, a wide viewing angle, and black–white display. Three switching wave forms can be used to switch the cell between π/2 and 5π/2 twist states. Controlling the selection voltage amplitude can provide gray scales for the cell. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The contrast ratio of reflective bistable twisted nematic displays are optimized by means of a parameter space approach. By plotting the contrast ratio as a function of the twist angle and thickness-birefringence product of the display, the regions where the display shows the best contrast ratio are clearly shown. Both the absolute reflectance and wavelength dispersion of two bistable twisted states are investigated. It is confirmed that high contrast ratio of over 100 and reflectance of 100% with polarized light input are possible for such reflectance bistable displays. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The surface morphology and microstructure of laser-ablated Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 (PZT) films on a (100) SrTiO3 (STO) substrate at early growth stage are characterized by means of atomic-force microscope, x-ray diffraction, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy analysis. The (100) STO surface is found to be very favorable for epitaxial growth of (001) PZT films, which undergo a three-dimensional island growth mode. We observed a two-layer structure at the film thickness around 40–50 nm when small nuclei/grains merge into large grains. With further increase of film thickness, a column-like growth mode dominates the film crystalline structure, which results in an almost independent in-plain grain size of 100–150 nm with increasing film thickness and a limited film roughness. A very sharp interface between the PZT thin film and STO substrate is observed. The PZT film shows a perfect stacking lattice at a thickness of around 20 nm and above, indicating that the misalignment due to the interface stress and defects is healed after stacking about 50 ML of the film. These results have shed some light on the growth mechanism of epitaxial PZT film on YBCO or other bottom layers for microelectromechanical systems application. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
