    Notes: Malignant schwannoma arising in the retroperitoneum is rare. A 68-year-old man underwent transsacral resection for an intrapelvic tumor which proved to be a malignant schwannoma. The transsacral approach is simple and effective, and should be considered for primary management of retrovesicular and retroprostatic tumors.

    Notes: Summary: Recent progress of genetic engineering allows us to create animal models expressing the new genetic phenotype and also indicates a sure future for clinical use of gene therapy. We applied HVJ-liposome method for manipulation of transforming growth factor (TGF)-β gene expression in anti-Thy-1 experimental glomerulonephritis. Either the glomerular introduction of TGF-β antisense oligodeoxynucleotides or transfection of gene for decorin, a natural inhibitor of TGF-β, into the skeletal muscle could suppress the extracellular matrix (ECM) expansion in glomerulonephritis. Thus, these results may suggest the potential of gene therapy as a novel treatment for fibrotic diseases caused by TGF-β.

    Notes: Abstract It was recognized early on that the digitization of medical information would advance the efficiency of diagnostic technology. However, the digitization of image data, which makes up the majority of medical information, is dependent on advances in technologies such as input, processing, transmission, storage, and display. Insufficient advances in such technologies has effectively limited the digitization of image data for medical use. The result of this has been non-networked systems or LANs confined to a single hospital. Such isolated systems integrate only portions of digital medical images such as x-ray computer tomography (CT), magnetic resonance (MR), and computed radiography (CR). Fortunately, recent advances in the areas of super high definition image I/O, high-quality encoding, super high speed transmission, and high-capacity storage has turned the tide in favor of the digitization and networking of all medical information. This paper will focus on the digitization and networking of medical image information used within hospitals and provide a multifaceted study of the technologies necessary for these advances. This will allow us to discuss the present state of related technical developments and the level that has been attained so far. In addition, we have targeted image information that demands the highest level of quality (radiological and pathological images) for application in medical diagnosis using super high definition images, the image technology being developed by the authors of this paper. We will cover the concrete issues and approaches to solutions that must be investigated when building and networking a digital system.

    Notes: Dielectric and thermal characterizations were performed for poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/poly (ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA) blends of different composition. The characteristics of PVDF β relaxation were shown to be little affected in the semicrystalline blends with PEMA. The relaxation strength, however, depends strongly on the PEMA content and a linear relation was found between the intensity of the β relaxation and the weight fraction of the PVDF crystal-amorphous interphase. Phase structures of the PVDF/PEMA blends are also proposed. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Piezoelectric constant, Young's elastic modulus, and dielectric constant of undyed and dyed films of poly(L-glutamate) were measured at 10 Hz over the temperature range -120 to 120°C. The temperature of the maximum in -d″14 shifts toward higher temperature up to 0.6 mg/g polymer of dye uptake and then shifts toward lower temperature by further dye sorption. The variation of the piezoelectric modulus was interpreted by the change of mobility of impurity ions in the sample.

    Notes: The piezoelectric effect due to shear in oriented films of DNA is strongly dependent on the relative humidity at which the films are equilibrated. Below about 60% relative humidity, the sign of the piezoelectric modulus is negative and its magnitude passes through a maximum with increasing temperature. This type of polarization appears to be due to the stress-induced orientation of dipoles in sugar-phosphate main chain. Above 75% relative humidity, water molecules are adsorbed by the bases and stabilize the ordered structure of double strand helices. In this crystalline state, the sign of the piezoelectric modulus is positive and its magnitude decreases markedly at about-75°C. This type of polarization appears to be due to the stress-induced orientation of dipoles in bases attached to the main chain. From comparisons between piezoelectric, elastic, and dielectric measurements, it is concluded that the piezoelectric relaxation observed at-75°C and 75% relative humidity is mainly due to the dielectric relaxation of the bases in the double helix.

    Notes: Piezoelectric, elastic, and dielectric properties of films of poly(β-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB), an optically active natural polymer, were measured as functions of frequency and temperature. In mechanical properties, three relaxation processes were observed at 10 Hz: the α dispersion at 130°C, the β dispersion at room temperature, and the γ dispersion at -120°C. It was concluded from x-ray diffraction and the thermal expansion coefficient that the α dispersion can be ascribed to thermal molecular motions in the crystalline phase, that the β dispersion is the primary dispersion due to the glass transition, and that the γ dispersion is related to local molecular motion of the main chains in the amorphous phase. Piezoelectric relaxations were also observed in these relaxation regions. It is proposed that the high-temperature process is due to ionic dc conduction. The piezoelectric relaxation at room temperature is ascribed to the increase of piezoelectric activity in the oriented noncrystalline phase, in which the sign of the piezoelectric modulus is opposite to that in the oriented crystalline phase.
