    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé On présente une nouvelle technique par intégration directe relative à la méthode d'extension virtuelle d'une fissure, qui recourt à une approche par variations de la formulation des éléments finis. Delorenzi, et Haber et Koh, ont déjà présenté des techniques similaires en vue de déduire la vitesse de relaxation de l'énergie sous forme d'intégrales explicites. Toutefois, la formulation présentée ici non seulement procure des résultats exacts, mais en outre est d'un usage plus simple et plus général que les précédentes. En outre, la méthode permet une extension pour déduire des dérivées d'ordre supérieur de la vitesse de relaxation de l'énergie, notamment les vitesses relatives à des ruptures de mode mixte. En recourant au théorème de Batti et au concept d'énergie mutuelle, il est également possible d'appliquer une technique de découplage effectif pour des facteurs d'intensité de contraintes relatifs à un mode mixte. Combiné aux dérivées d'ordre supérieur pour la vitesse de relaxation de l'énergie, cette technique de découplage peut être employée pour déduire les dérivées premières des facteurs d'intensité de contraintes, lesquelles peuvent être à leur tour utilisées à une meilleure prédiction de la stabilité d'une fissure et de sa vitesse de propagation.
    Notes: Abstract A new direct-integration technique for the virtual crack extension method which employs variational theory in the finite element formulation is presented. Similar techniques to derive explicit integral forms of the energy release rate have been introduced by deLorenzi [1] and Haber and Koh [2]; however, the formulation proposed here not only provides accurate results but also is simpler and more general than the earlier forms. Moreover, this method can be extended to derive higher order derivatives of the energy release rate, e.g., the rates of the energy release rate for mixed-mode fracture. With Betti's theorem and the mutual energy concept [3], a simple but effective uncoupling technique for mixed-mode stress intensity factors is also possible. Combined with the higher order derivatives of the energy release rate, this uncoupling technique can be used to derive the first derivatives of the stress intensity factors which in turn can be employed for better prediction of crack stability and rate of propagation.

    Notes: Two domain-by-domain algorithms, suitable for coarse-grained parallel processing analysis of the transient structural dynamics equation, are investigated for accuracy. The application under specific consideration is the analysis of three-dimensional framed structures subjected to time-varying loading. The domain-by-domain approaches attempt to include the advantageous aspects of both conditionally stable explicit algorithms, which require no simultaneous solution of equations and employ simple communication, and unconditionally stable implicit algorithms, which permit large time steps. The alternating group explicit algorithm is developed for finite element analysis, and its accuracy is investigated for a linear formulation. The group implicit algorithm is extended to non-linear finite element analysis, and its accuracy is investigated for the frame dynamics application. Both algorithms are shown to provide inadequate accuracy for practical time step sizes.

    Notes: This paper presents an attempt to clarify further the nature of the overstiffness of thin curved structural elements. It follows the approach presented by Ashwell and co-workers1,2 who based their study on shape functions of arch elements. Such elements display the same stiff behaviour as complex shell elements but are simpler to study and understand. An examination of several discretizations for a two-dimensional curved beam-column element for linear elastic analysis of arches is performed. This examination and the numerical results obtained from these approximations provide a new interpretation of the artificial strains based on the mapping variables of shape functions. Two new methods to reduce the artificial stiffness of the element are proposed.

    Notes: An interactive computer graphics system has been developed for generating the geometric description of an arbitrary shell surfface. The various difficulties facing the user of sophisticated, doubly-curved shell finite elements and the inefficiency of preprocessing for shell analysis are discussed to explain the benefits of this system. The method is a synthesis of spline theory and algorithms, and an interactive means for man-machine communication. The basic technique employed is a modified lofting method in which cardinal splines. An inversion procedure is incorporated which increases significantly the efficiency of the B-spline approximation process. Static and dynamic graphic displays greatly enhance visualization at any stage of the procedure. Two examples of practical interest are presented in some detail to demonstratge the flexibility and usefulness of this approach. Some natural extensions of this system for interactive mesh generation on the surface are also demonstrated.

    Notes: A new approach to the generation of near-optimum finite element meshes is presented. Like other current methods, the procedure presented uses the results of a previous analysis to improve the idealization, but unlike other procedures a new element mesh is generated in each cycle with the aid of interactive computer graphics. The procedure generates near-optimum two-dimensional meshes on one cycle employing a grid optimization criterion based on variations in the strain energy density and using a software system which operates like an interactive finite element preprocessor. The example problems presented demonstrate the efficiency and flexibility of the approach.

    Notes: An interactive computer graphic system has been developed for generating and editing three-dimensional finite element meshes. The various difficulties inherent to the generation of solid three-dimensional geometries through an effective use of computer graphic techniques are examined to explain the advantages of this system. The method is a combination of discrete transfinite mapping and cubic spline blending algorithms, used, respectively, to create plane cross-sectional meshes, and to generate the three-dimensional geometry by interpolaring between the cross-sections. The communication between analyst and machine is based on a digitizing tablet and a refresh vector scope. The dynamic viewing capabilities and depth cueing of the vector display greatly enhance the perception of the mesh three-dimensionality. Multi-view dynamic display is also employed to facilitate node or element selection. The flexibility and usefulness of the system are illustrated with the help of three examples of practical interest.

    Notes: This paper studies and compares the domain partitioning algorithms presented by Farhat, Al-Nasra and Nguyen, Malone, and Simon/Hsieh et al., for load balancing in parallel finite element analysis. Both the strengths and weaknesses of these algorithms are discussed. Some possible improvements to the partitioning algorithms are also suggested and studied. A new approach for evaluating domain partitioning algorithms is described. Direct numerical comparisons among the considered partitioning algorithms are then conducted using this suggested approach with both regular and irregular finite element meshes of different order and dimensionality. The test problems used in the comparative studies along with the results obtained provide a set of benchmark examples for other researchers to evaluate both new and existing partitioning algorithms. In addition, interactive graphics tools used in this work to facilitate the evaluation and comparative studies are presented. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
