Notes: Describes a new finite element scheme for the large-scale analysis of compressible and incompressible viscous flows. The scheme is based on a combined compressible- incompressible Galerkin least-squares (GLS) space-time variational formulation. Three- dimensional unstructured meshes are employed, with piecewise-constant temporal interpolation, local time-stepping for steady flows, and linear continuous spatial interpolation in all the variables. The scheme incorporates automatic adaptive mesh refinement, with a choice of various error indicators. It is implemented on a distributed-memory parallel computer, and includes an automatic load-balancing procedure. Demonstrates the ability to solve both compressible and incompressible viscous flow problems using the parallel adaptive framework via numerical examples. These include Mach 3 flow over a flat plate, and a divergence-free buoyancy-driven flow in a cavity. The latter is a model for the steady melt flow in a Czochralski crystal growth process.

Notes: Abstract This is the first of a two part paper that addresses the integration of finite element modeling and geometric modeling. Instead of considering the integration of currently available systems, this paper addresses both modeling techniques in general terms and identifies the functions that are needed to integrate them, taking full advantage of the capabilities of both. A set of geometric communication operators are identified and defined for use in carrying out this integration process. This first part considers the integration of geometric modeling and mesh generation, whereas the second part considers the specification of analysis attributes, accounting for domain differences between the geometric and finite element models and generating finite element models using element types that are of a lesser dimension than the geometry they represent.

Notes: Abstract This paper discusses an automatic, adaptive finite element modeling system consisting of mesh generation, finite element analysis, and error estimation. The individual components interact with one another and efficiently reduce the finite element error to within an acceptable value and perform only a minimum number of finite element analyses. One of the necessary components in the automated system is a multiple-level local remeshing algorithm. Givenh-refinement information provided by an a posteriori error estimator, and adjacency information available in the mesh data structures, the local remeshing algorithm grades the refinement toward areas requesting refinement. It is shown that the optimal asymptotic convergence rate is achieved, demonstrating the effectiveness of the intelligent multiple-level localh-refinement.

Notes: Abstract A complete set of data structures and mesh modification tools for effectively defining unstructured threedimensional multigrids on general curved domains is presented. The mesh adaptive procedures can be used for generating hierarchies of unstructured grids by means of uniform or local refinement and coarsening, while a local retriangulation algorithm is used for controlling the degradation of the quality of the mesh during adaptation. Intergrid transfer operators are efficiently realized ‘on the fly’ during adaptation. The data structure allows the efficient storage and handling of multiple grids, where mesh entities belonging to multiple levels can be stored just once. The capabilities and performance of the proposed procedures are exemplified by means of examples.

Notes: Abstract This paper addresses the issue of specifying the functional information beyond that of the geometric domain of the object needed to qualify a problem in mathematical physics for which an engineering analysis is to be performed. A generalized geometry-based approach for the specification of this information is presented. This information, plus the domain definition to which it is tied, represents the complete specification of the problem to be analyzed.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents an expert system-based procedure for the creation of airframe finite element models from the geometric model available in a computer-aided design system. The objectives of the approach presented is the computerization of a process that is currently carried out in a semimanual manner, include previous modeling knowledge into the system, and provide a clear path for an ever-increasing level of automation in the process of creating analysis models for this class of structure. A main feature of the system developed is the combined use of algorithmic procedures and expert knowledge operating on data provided by previously run design software to produce an entirely different form of model to be used as input to a numerical analysis.

Notes: Abstract The propagation process of an interfacial crack in composite material is studied using the modified maximum dilatational strain energy density criterion, NT-criterion. Some necessary assumptions have been adopted to facilitate the use of the NT-criterion in this case. The stress intensity factors at the crack tip are extracted from the complex displacement field and finite element results. A simple algorithm for automatic crack propagation is presented with an illustrative example.
