Notes: Abstract A new endemic focus of human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTL V-I) was recently reported among Mashhadi Jews, a group of immigrants from northeastern Iran to Israel. We extracted DNAs from fresh peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and/or gargle mouthwash from 10 HTL V-I carriers, who consisted of members of one family, and HTL V-I-associated myelopathy (HAM) and adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) patients. Long terminal repeat (LTR) regions of proviral DNAs were sequenced and analyzed phylogenetically. In a phylogenetic tree, all the Mashhadi HTL V-I isolates belonged to subtype A, one of the three subtypes of the cosmopolitan type of HTL V-I, and made a tight cluster distinct from the other isolates of subtype A from Japan, India, the Caribbean Basin, and South America. Although a few nucleotide substitutions were observed among the clones sequenced, no characteristic sequence variation was found in different disease manifestations, even in one family or different sources of DNA preparation.

Notes: Abstract Functional adaptation of the remnant intestine after extensive resection of small bowel is well documented. The effects of partial resection of large bowel on the remaining colon have not been characterized. Transepithelial potential (VT),tissue resistance (RT),and short-circuit current (I sc) were measuredin vitro across distal colonic tissue of rats three weeks after proximal hemicolectomy with ileotransversotomy and compared to the same parameters measured in the distal colon of control animals. In a second series of experiments, anin vivo perfusion technique was used to measure changes in sodium, potassium, and water transport in distal colon following proximal hemicolectomy. A 2.5-fold increase inV T (P〈0.01), a 62% increase inR T (P〈0.001), and a 35% increase inI sc (P〈0.05) were observed three weeks following hemicolectomy when compared to control animals. A 64% increase in net sodium absorption (P〈0.025), no significant change in net potassium transport, and a 115% increase in net water absorption (P〈0.01) were demonstrated in hemicolectomized animals when compared to control. It is concluded that in the rat the distal colon is capable of functional adaptation to increase net sodium and water absorption within three weeks after proximal hemicolectomy. The mechanism responsible for this adaptive process has yet to be defined. Our findings may explain the lack of chronic diarrhea in patients undergoing right hemicolectomy.

Notes: Abstract Purpose: The role of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) in the prevention of severe ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) was evaluated. Methods: Ovarian hyperstimulation was induced in eight rabbits using human menopausal gonadotropin/human chorionic gonadotropin (hMG/hCG) after pretreatment with IVIG (IVIG group) or bovine serum albumin (BSA group). Main outcome measures included (1) signs of OHSS, such as the degree of ascites formation and the increase in body weight; and (2) the degree of ovarian stimulation as reflected by serum sex-steroid hormone levels. Results: A significantly lower ascites response and a tendency toward a decreased change in body weight were observed in the IVIG group compared to the BSA group. Serum estradiol, progesterone, total protein, and ovarian weights were not statistically different between the two groups. Conclusions: IVIG prevented severe OHSS in a rabbit model, whereas BSA did not. Further studies are justified in an attempt to clarify the role of the immune system and IVIG in the pathophysiology and prevention of severe OHSS.
