    Notes: Summary Most neurons in the cat's spiral ganglia are bipolar myelinated cells; a few are unmyelinated. The usual cytoplasmic organelles are found in both types of neurons. However unmyelinated cells and some of the myelinated ones are especially rich in neurofilaments and neurotubules. The perikarya of myelinated cells are surrounded by 4–25 lamellae contributed by more than one Schwann cell. Conversely, one Schwann cell can ensheath more than one neuron. Perikaryal myelin consists of a combination of the loose and compact variety. Irregularities in loose myelin probably account for the variation in number of layers among segments of an ensheathment; some lamellae change direction to form myelin convolutions within a neuronal covering. Unmyelinated neurons are covered incompletely by 1–3 layers of Schwann cells. Processes of these cells remain unmyelinated whereas those of myelinated neurons become more heavily myelinated distal to the first node of Ranvier. Regions of the axolemma of unmyelinated and myelinated processes are free of Schwann cell covering and are separated from the interstitial space by basement membrane only. The physiology of the eighth nerve relevant to our findings are discussed.

    Notes: Sympathetic ganglia of six Cnemidophorus neomexicanus lizards were fixed by immersion with glutaraldehyde or a combination of glutaraldehyde and paraformaldehyde. All ganglia were post-fixed in 1% osmium tetroxide and embedded in Epon.Neuronal somata and processes of stellate ganglia were ensheathed typically by capsular cell cytoplasm and membranes; however, parts of some processes were invested only by basement membrane. Axo-somatic, axo-dendritic and axo-axonal synapses were observed. Pre- and post-synaptic processes contained 200 Å neurotubules, 100 Å neurofilaments, 225-500 Å presumptive glycogen granules and occasional multivesicular bodies. Presynaptic endings contained 500-700 Å “clear” vesicles and a few dense-cored vesicles of 600-1100 Å.Aggregates composed of 225-500 Å granules, presumably glycogen, were frequently found in peripheral perikaryal positions in intimate association with lipid droplets. Clusters of particles within somata were also found which resembled ribosomes but were not associated with endoplasmic reticulum or vesicular membranous elements. These clusters, perhaps “areticular Nissl substance,” were associated in some instances with fibrillar material or lattice-like granular structures. Abundant and frequently large lipid droplets were observed in proximity to the ribosomal-like particulate material.

    Notes: Summary The arcuate nucleus, median eminence, and the lateral preoptic area from the brains of aldehyde-perfused male and female rats were examined by electron microscopy. In the lateral preoptic area, three neuronal types are described: a small light neuron, a larger light one, and a dark neuron resembling the larger light one in size and nuclear shape. Many myelinated axons are interposed among single neurons or neuronal pairs. The relationship of structures to each other is discussed. Several observations not previously reported are illustrated from tissue of the arcuate nucleus and median eminence.

    Notes: Summary In this study the ultrastructural features of tissue from the posterior hypothalamic area were investigated. Ovariectomized cats which were either treated with sesame oil placebo or with estrogen for varying periods of time were used. The following observations were noted. 1. The cat that was treated with placebo one month after ovariectomy showed an increase in the number of dense core (granulated) vesicles within neuronal cytoplasm. This observation was not apparent in the cats which were treated with estrogen one month after ovariectomy. 2. In the cat that had been Ovariectomized for two months before treatment with placebo was initiated, axon terminals contained more dense core vesicles than were observed in axonal endings from estrogen-treated cats in the two month ovariectomy group. 3. The tissue from cats that were continuously treated with estrogen for one month after ovariectomy displayed dense-core vesicles in both somata and neuropil. It is suggested that the ultrastructural changes observed were dependent on both the time of initiation and the length of estrogen treatment. 4. It is concluded that the preliminary observations in this study provide anatomical evidence suggesting that estrogen level in the cat may affect the functional activity of the posterior hypothalamic area.

    Notes: Summary The accessory hyperstriatum of normal domestic fowl (Gallus domesticus) was fixed with aldehydes followed by osmication and studied by electron microscopy. The relationships among neurons, neuroglia, and their processes is reported. Large and smaller neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendroglia are identified and their fine structure described. Most axonal endings contain spheroidal presynaptic vesicles, but a few terminals with flattened vesicles also are seen. Symmetrical and asymmetrical synaptic specializations of axon terminals are observed.

    Notes: Summary Numerous neurons and glia in the accessory hyperstriatum of the domestic fowl contain a cilium that is attached to a basal body. The accessory centriole is in the vicinity of the basal body and in some instances a connection between the two centrioles is noted. Cross-striated rootlets are associated with the basal body and the accessory centriole, however, some rootlets are found distant to centrioles. Cross sections of cilia show that most accessory hyperstriatal cilia have an 8+1 fiber pattern. Several proposed functional roles of neuronal cilia are discussed.
