    Notes: Abstract Using laser microproble mass analysis (LAMMA), it is possible to characterize the inorganic composition of clays and to study adsorption phenomena. Natural sepiolite, (Na-sepiolite), montmorillonite and saponite samples from Anatolia (Turkey) have been investigated. All the clays gave different fingerprint mass spectra which allowed a quick estimation of the relative amounts of exchangeable cations as well as the trace contaminants and the homogeneity of their distribution. The adsorption behaviour of these clays for pyridine was also studied and it appeared that pyridine molecules penetrated the inner layers, as well as being adsorbed on the external surface.

    Notes: Abstract The adsorption behaviour of sepiolite, loughlinite (Nasepiolite) and diatomite for N,N-dimethylaniline (DMA) and its catalytically formed oxidation products are studied using IR spectroscopy. It is found that sepiolite and loughlinite adsorb DMA and then react with it more easily than diatomite. The adsorption capacity sequence of DMA for the minerals studied is sepiolite 〉 loughlinite 〉 diatomite.

    Notes: Abstract The removal of Sr, Cs, U and Th ions from aqueous solution by means of natural pumice stone was studied using energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (EDXRF) as an analytical tool. The results indicate the usefulness of pumice powder and the removal efficiency was found to be in order of Th〉Sr〉Cs ions, which is altered by the pH of the solution.

    Notes: Abstract The Eskişehir-Beylikahir district has the largest and richest thorium and rare earth elements deposits in Turkey. The uranium and thorium concentrations of samples taken from four different parts of this area have been determined by the delayed neutron counting technique. The results are compared with those of previous analyses by other techniques and found to be in good agreement.

    Notes: Abstract Uranium and thorium concentrations of fluorite samples taken from the main fluorite beds of Anatolia (Turkey) have been determined by fission fragment radiography using solid state nuclear track detectors (SSNTDs). The fissionable elements concentration of the fluorite samples were found to be 10−4–10−7 g/g. The Th/U ratio, obtained for all the fluorite samples, is found to be characteristic for the location of the samples. Some correlations between the concentration of Th and those of lanthanites and concentration of U and that of Mo or Zr are observed.

    Notes: Abstract The specific activities of 238U, 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in the composite samples of phosphate ores of type 1 (grey-coloured ore, with high P2O5 (21–35%) and low calcite content) and of type II (grey coloured calcite ore, with low P2O5 content (5–17%)) of Karatas-Mazidag phosphate deposit, Turkey, have been determined by gamma spectrometry together with phosphatic animal feed ingredients. The concentrations of 238U, 226Ra, 232Th and 40K were found to be up to 557, 625, 26 and 297 Bq·kg−1, respectively. Radium equivalent activities of samples examined were calculated and compared with those given in the literature. Uranium concentration of the individual phosphate samples, from which composite samples of ores of type I and II have been prepared, were found to show an increasing trend with increasing P2O5 and F concentrations.

    Notes: Abstract The quantitative analysis of the human femoral bone of 17 tuberculosis-arthritis (Koch-arthritis) patients (9 males and 8 females) in the age range of 45–65, for Ca, P, Zn, Sr, Ba, La and Ce were performed by using radioisotope energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) and the results were compared with those of 12 healthy control groups (8 males and 4 females) in the age range of 37–58. The results indicate that the concentrations of P, Ca, and Sr in the control group are higher than those in the patient group, while the concentrations of Zn, Ba, La and Ce are not significantly different.

    Notes: Abstract The radioactivity levels of Istanbul environs lignites were determined. The gamma-spectrometric technique has been used for the determination of activity levels of naturally occurring radionuclides 235+238U, 228+232Th, 40K, 226Ra and fallout radionuclides 137Cs in lignites taken from 7 different parts of Istanbul. Concentration of 238U, 228+232Th, 40K, 226Ra 137Cs and 235U were found up to 1.6 ppm, 1.7 ppm, 4.9 ppm, 56.8 Bq/kg, 34 Bq/kg, 1.8 Bq/kg, 1.6 Bq/kg, respectively. In addition total alpha- and beta-activity levels in lignite samples were found to be 7.6 and 15 eps, respectively.

    Notes: Abstract Fifteen ash samples taken from filters and bottom products of boilers or chimneys of seven coal fired power plants in Turkey have been analysed quantitatively for some minor elements using radioisotope energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF). It is found that samples contain Cu, Zn, Rb, Sr, Zr, Mo, Cs, Sb, Ba, Pb, Y, La, Ce, Nd and Sm in different amounts. An ash sample taken from the electro-filter of the Ambarli, fuel oil fired-power plant was also analysed for comparison and found that it contained the smallest amount of potentially toxic elements.

    Notes: The adsorption of pyrazine by two different Anatolian sepiolites and by natural and ion-exchanged (Fe, Co, Cu and Sn) bentonites was investigated by vibrational spectroscopy. The spectroscopic results indicate that the pyrazine molecules adsorbed on sepiolite and bentonites are coordinated to either surface hydroxyls by H-bonding interaction (in the case of sepiolite) or to exchangeable cations (in the case of bentonites) through both nitrogen lone pairs as bidentate ligands. X-ray diffraction patterns of the clays were also recorded and the basal spacings of pyrazine-treated natural and ion-exchanged bentonites were found to be around 14.7 Å. The results suggest that pyrazine molecules intercalate the interlayers of bentonite with a monolayer arrangement.
