Notes: Plasma nitrotyrosine and nitrite/nitrate levels as markers of nitrosative stress and plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) and protein carbonyl as markers of oxidative stress were determined in patients with Behçet disease (BD). To evaluate the balance between oxidant and antioxidant systems in these patients, we measured erythrocyte lysate CuZn superoxide dismutase (CuZn SOD) activity, plasma sulfhydryl (SH) values and total antioxidant activity. We also determined levels of plasma C-reactive protein (CRP), a key marker of inflammation, and compared them with those of healthy subjects. We found plasma nitrotyrosine levels of BD patients to be increased, indicating that nitrosative stress may occur in these patients. Plasma MDA and CRP levels in BD patients were found to be significantly higher than those in control group. However, plasma SH levels were decreased. No changes were observed in the other measured parameters of the patient group compared with the controls. These data suggest the possible involvement of nitric oxide (NO) together with reactive oxygen substances (ROS) in the pathogenesis of BD.

Notes: Abstract Sediment samples collected from the Eastern Black Sea in 1993 from 15 sampling stations of different depths have been analyzed. Natural and artifical radionuclide activity levels in offshore sediment samples from the Eastern Black Sea in Turkey are reported about seven years after the Chernobyl accident. The purpose of this paper is to follow up the earlier study and present results for the distributions of radionuclides in sediments of the Black Sea.

Notes: Abstract Moss samples collected from the eastern Black Sea about 6.5 years after the Chernobyl accident have been analyzed for radiocesium activity.134Cs activity was also detected in all the samples beside137Cs radionuclide. The levels of total cesium activity in the mosses proved that the coastal zone in the eastern Black Sea region was highly contaminated.

Notes: Abstract The radioactivity levels of Istanbul environs lignites were determined. The gamma-spectrometric technique has been used for the determination of activity levels of naturally occurring radionuclides 235+238U, 228+232Th, 40K, 226Ra and fallout radionuclides 137Cs in lignites taken from 7 different parts of Istanbul. Concentration of 238U, 228+232Th, 40K, 226Ra 137Cs and 235U were found up to 1.6 ppm, 1.7 ppm, 4.9 ppm, 56.8 Bq/kg, 34 Bq/kg, 1.8 Bq/kg, 1.6 Bq/kg, respectively. In addition total alpha- and beta-activity levels in lignite samples were found to be 7.6 and 15 eps, respectively.

Notes: Abstract Translocation and percent distribution of137Cs in different parts of the tea plant have been investigated from the foliar aborption and root uptake in Chemobyl contaiminated soil during 1987–1994. The results showed that the transfer of the radionuclide from soil to the plant occurred only in the roots during this long period. On the other hand, the present data confirmed that the new leaves of the plant directly accumulated137Cs from the stem in growing seasons after translocation into the stem from leaves during the Chemobyl accident. The natural depuration rate of137Cs in the stem part of tea plant is estimated as on effective half-life 1750 days.
