Notes: Abstract The extra-embryonic albuminous capsule fluid of the marine prosobranch Nucella lapillus L., collected from March to May 1988 in Brittany, France, has been investigated by sodium dodecylsulfate-polyacrylamide-gelelectrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and biochemical assays. The fluid at the gastrula- and early veliger stage of the snail embryo was analysed for proteins on SDS-gels, i.e., for acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, β-glucuronidase and arylsulfatase activities. The protein and inorganic phosphorous contents were also determined. Electrophoresis revealed the presence of different proteins and a variation in the band pattern during early developmental stages. The total protein content of the capsule fluid decreases significantly from gastrula to early veliger stage. In the differentiated developmental stage the acid phosphatase activity was higher than the poorly differentiated gastrula stage. The detected activity of arylsulfatase indicates that acid mucopolysaccharides are present. In general, observed changes in the organic components of the intracapsular fluid of N. lapillus substantiate the nutritive value for developing embryos.

Notes: [Auszug] TISSUE-SPECIFIC anti-mitotic substances, now known as chalones1, have been extracted from a number of tissues, and especially well known are the epidermal and granule -cytic chalones2'3. Although it is tissue-specific the epidermal chalone is not species-specific4. The various chalones evidently ...

Notes: Abstract. Sprague-Dawley rats received intragastrically a single dose of 226Ra or 224Ra once weekly for 21 weeks. During this period the animals of both groups were thus exposed to comparable doses. After 12 weeks, a shortening of the maxillary incisors was observed, and this progressed during the course of the 55–week experiment. Radiologically, a loss of pulpal transparency and an apical irregular opacity in the maxillary incisors were demonstrable. Histologically, dysplastic changes of the maxillary incisors and multiple resorptions at the cemento-enamel junction of the molars were seen. The observed alterations were more pronounced in the 226Ra group than in the 224Ra treated group. The experimentally induced resorptions were comparable to those observed in patients who had incorporated 224Ra or 226Ra. Clinical, radiological, histological, γ-spectrometrical, and autoradiographical findings, as well as dose-estimations, are described.

Notes: The periodontal membrane of European hamster maxillary incisors showed histologic changes consisting of an irregularly orientated, less vascularized connective tissue which included abundant cementicle-like structures. The changes were multilocal and bilateral, growing towards the alveolar bone (Grade 1), causing atrophy of the alveolar bone due to compression (Grade 2) and reaching the periosteal membranes (Grade 3). In a few animals, the lesions were seen after one year. They were seen in 80% of hamsters more than 2 years old. Carcinogenic exposure did not alter the latency and incidence of the alterations. The lesions were thought to be a spontaneously occurring disease representing a nodular cemento-fibrous dysplasia of the periodontium. As, morphologically, no exact attribution to other odontogenic or mesenchymal growth could be made, the entity of this periodontal lesion was considered. Although the changes observed in the periodontal membrane of the maxillary incisors of the European hamster were not exactly comparable to odontogenic cemental lesions in man, they may serve as a model to further clarify the nature of fibro-osseous lesions.

Notes: Summary The aim of this investigation was to clarify the influence of dynamic interferential current (DIC). Two sinusoidal currents of medium frequency are superimposed within the body to determine the reactive changes of bone healing after osteotomy. An osteotomy was performed on the radius and ulna of the right foreleg of 34 ‘black-head breeding sheep’. The radius shaft was deperiostalized and unstably fixed with a four-hole AO-plate leaving a gap of at least 1 mm width. DIC of different mA-values has used to treat 24 sheep 3 times per week for 10 min. The other 10 animals were not treated with DIC but used as control animals. The different results of our clinical, radiological, histological and chemical analyses to date indicate that callus formation is accelerated by the application of DIC. The fracture callus of treated animals is strongly mineralized.

(Methodische Einzelheiten sind in Teil I beschrieben).
Notes: Summary In the course of supplementary physical and chemical investigations of the influence ofDynamicInterferential Current (DIC) on bone healing 24 black-head sheep were subjected to transversal osteotomy of the radius. After an instable osteosynthesis the site was exposed to repeated therapy with DIC of varying mA intensity. (Methodological details are described in part 1.) DIC therapy resulted in altering the temperatures in the treated tissue, dependent on the mA intensity. Further associations were verified between DIC intensity and the occurrence of hydroxyprolin, an amino acid specific collagen, which also reflected increased calcifying activity. Measurements of the calcium and phosphorus levels in the regenerated (newly forming) bone tissue documented full mineralization in the DIC-treated animals at a much earlier date than in the untreated controls that had undergone similar operations. Whether DIC specifically stimulates osteogenesis within “healing” bones is still unclear.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Pregnant gold hamsters received di-ethylnitrosamine (NÄNA) subcutaneously (2–14 mg; daily dose 2 mg) in the second half of gestation. Twenty-five weeks after birth of the litter multiple tracheal papillomata were found in 42% of the young. In addition, a diffuse squamous epithelial cell metaplasia was disclosed in the region of the tracheobronchial tree. A hepatotoxic effect (cirrhosis) was observed 25 weeks after birth in 68% of the young. DÄNA, therefore, crossed the placenta in the fetuses.
