    Notes: Abstract The growth rates of two fish species, the winter flounder Pseudopleuronectes americanus (Walbaum) (19.3 to 42.6 mm total length, TL) and the tautog Tautogaonitis (Linnaeus) (23.9 to 55.9 mm TL), were used to evaluate habitat quality under and around municipal piers in the Hudson River estuary, USA. Growth rates were measured in a series of 10 d field caging-experiments conducted at two large piers in the summers of 1996 and 1997. Cages (0.64 m2) were deployed along␣transects that stretched from underneath the piers to beyond them, encompassing the pier edge (the transitional zone between the pier interior and the outside). Growth in weight (G w ) was determined at five locations along the transect, 40 m beneath the pier, 20 m beneath the pier, at the pier edge, 20 m beyond the pier edge, and 40 m beyond. Under piers, mean growth rates of winter flounder and tautogs were negative (x¯G W  = −0.02 d−1), and rates were comparable to laboratory-starved control fishes (x¯G W  = −0.02 d−1). In contrast, mean growth rates at pier edges and in open waters beyond piers were generally positive (x¯G W ranged from −0.001 to +0.05 d−1), with growth at pier edges often being more variable and less rapid than at open-water sites. Analyses of stomach contents upon retrieval of caged fishes revealed that dry weights of food were generally higher among fishes caged at open-water stations (x¯ range = 0.02 to 0.72 mg dry wt) than at pier-edge (x¯ range = 0.01 to 0.54 mg) or under-pier (x¯ range = 0.03 to 0.11 mg) stations, although it was apparent that benthic prey were available at all stations on the transect. Our results indicate poor feeding conditions among fishes caged under piers, and suboptimal foraging among fishes caged at pier edges. Inadequate growth rates can lead to higher rates of mortality, and, based on these and other earlier experiments, we conclude that under-pier environments are poor-quality habitats for some species of juvenile fishes.

    Notes: We describe a technique for substantially decreasing the noise in SQUID measurement applications which are intrinsically low frequency or dc and thus fall below the 1/f knee in the SQUID noise energy spectrum. The technique involves reversing the SQUID input leads at a chopping frequency of ∼100 Hz using laser-driven switches which form a double-pole–double-throw network. For sufficiently low noise switching, the demodulate output no longer contains the SQUID low-frequency noise but rather noise at the SQUID white-noise floor. We present data demonstrating the low noise performance of a single laser switch, and include the electronics design required for the full implementation of the scheme.

Direct switching of the SQUID input leads at a frequency above the 1/f knee, a technique detailed in the preceding article [Anderson et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 60, xxx (1989)], extends white-noise floor to much lower frequencies with an accompanying loss of slew rate. For those applications where the loss of slew rate is unacceptable, we present in this article an alternate chopping technique which can preserve the original SQUID slew rate with a loss in the low-frequency signal-to-noise energy ratio of about a factor of four.

    Notes: Abstract Thermal fluctuations of the order parameter in a superconductor above its transition temperature result in manifestations of the ordered state which appears below the transition. In a Josephson junction consisting of two metals with different transition temperatures there is associated with the incipient superconductivity an enhanced conductivity across the junction at temperatures between the transition temperatures of the two metals. The enhanced conductivity is observed as a current which flows in excess of the junction quasiparticle current. The excess current has been investigated using Sn-Sn x O y -Pb and Al-Al x O y -Pb junctions masked to eliminate effects of graded film edges. Details of the variation of the excess current with voltage and temperature are in quantitative agreement with calculations in the Al-Al x O y -Pb junctions. The excess current-voltage characteristic is a direct measure of the imaginary part of the generalized susceptibility above T c . The pair relaxation frequency in aluminum based on the data is consistent with the theoretical value.

    Notes: Abstract The analytic structure of gauge fields in the presence of fermions is studied in arbitrary symmetry. A Hamiltonian formalism is developed which relates Cauchy-Riemann equations to the symmetry. The formalism is applied to three problems in (2+1)-dimensional Euclidean space: (1) a free fermion, (2) a fermion interacting with a massless scalar field, and (3) a fermion interacting with a vector field. We find that the Hamiltonian for the free fermion is analytic and single-valued in a finite region of momentum space. With the addition of an auxiliary field, the Hamiltonian can be analytic in the entire momentum space. The scalar field then acquires spin-dependent coordinates by interaction with the fermion; the interactions break the Abelian symmetry ofφ so thatφ →φ 1∼ 1/(x1 −-im 1 −1 (x1 −-im 1 −1 ), wherem 1 are spin-dependent and multivalued. There are four solutions for each chirality eigenvalue of the fermion. For spinless fermionsφ gives the Jackiw-Nohl-Rebbi solution and is separable into Coulomb-like 1/x analytic functions on the first and fourth quadrants. For a vector field the results are similar except that the coordinates are not spindependent or multivalued; interactions break the initial symmetry andA μ(x μ)→A μ 1 (x μ) and theA μ 1 have a non-Abelian algebra. Thel indices represent directions fixed by spin matrices in a spin-dependent color space.
