    Notes: Abstract. Reciprocal recombination (chiasma formation) between homologs appears to be essential for promoting chromosome segregation at the first meiotic division. However, chiasmata that form near the ends of chromosomes are much less efficient at promoting segregation. To determine the frequency of reciprocal recombination near the end of a chromosome, genetic markers were inserted at ~7 kb intervals within the leftmost 30 kb of chromosome I from Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Analysis of recombination between the markers indicated that meiotic reciprocal recombination rates were much lower than on the rest of the chromosome and that rates increased with distance from the telomere. Thus, S. cerevisiae has evolved a mechanism that minimizes the occurrence of chiasmata that cannot promote meiotic segregation. Low rates of recombination were independent of the SIR2 and SIR3 gene products, suggesting that any mechanism for suppressing recombination was different from transcriptional repression due to a telomere position effect.

The preferred positions for meiotic double-strand breakage were mapped on Saccharomyces cerevisiae chromosomes I and VI, and on a number of yeast artificial chromosomes carrying human DNA inserts. Each chromosome had strong and weak double-strand break (DSB) sites. On average one DSB-prone region was detected by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis per 25 kb of DNA, but each chromosome had a unique distribution of DSB sites. There were no preferred meiotic DSB sites near the telomeres. DSB-prone regions were associated with all of the known ”hot spots” for meiotic recombination on chromosomes I, III and VI.

    Notes: Summary The properties of neurons in the nucleus ventralis lateralis (VL) of thalamus were examined by anatomical and electrophysiological methods and the following results were obtained: 1. There were two types of projection fibers from VL to the motor cortex. One type projected to a limited area of the cortex, the other arborized extensively and projected to a wide area of the cortex. 2. The widely arborizing projection fibers, i.e., wide projection fibers, showed a special terminal bush which was different from that of the specific projection fibers of VPL and spread as widely as 1.0 mm2 within the III layer of the motor cortex. 3. Neither narrow nor wide projection fibers carried specific information from the periphery but rather diffuse information arising from deep structures such as joints and periosts. 4. Both types of projection fibers branched somewhere in the white substance and projected to different areas of the motor cortex. 5. The chronaxie of these fibers was about the same as that of PT cells but considerably longer than spinal interneurons. The excitability of these fibers was lower than that of PT cells indicating that weak intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) does not excite these fibers. 6. The possible functional role of wide projection fibers was discussed in relation to the cortical efferent zones.

    Notes: The present study is an examination of the influence of rater characteristics as a source of bias in job characteristics information, as gleaned from the Job Diagnostic Survey (JDS). Participants (N=133) completed an initial JDS for own job characteristics. Non-incumbents (n=104) then completed a secondary JDS in order to rate incumbents' job characteristics. Non-incumbents' personality dimensions, own job characteristics, job satisfaction level, and incumbent satisfaction level were hypothesized as predictors of ratings of job characteristics of incumbents. Results indicate that two characteristics, job autonomy and dealing with others, were influenced by non-incumbents standing on these characteristics, and demonstrated evidence of the false consensus effect. Limitations and implications for interpreting job information are discussed.

    Notes: This study of 154 Dutch high school teachers examined processes by which occupational burnout may transfer from one person to another. Two conditions that may increase the probability of burnout contagion were investigated; namely, individual teachers' susceptibility to emotional contagion, and the frequency with which teachers are exposed to colleagues with student- and work-related problems. Consistent with hypotheses derived from theories about emotional contagion, the results suggest that bumout contagion was most pronounced under these 2 high-risk conditions. Specifically, the prevalence of perceived burnout among participants' colleagues was most strongly related to individual teachers' burnout (i. e., emotional exhaustion and depersonalization), when the teachers were highly susceptible to the emotions of others and when they frequently communicated with each other about work-related problems.

    Notes: Abstract Using affinity-purified rabbit polyclonal antibodies against an extracellular mannoprotein (gp400) of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the presence of immunohomologic proteins with similar electrophoretic mobility was shown in the culture medium of S. bayanus, S. paradoxus and S. pastorianus. Cross-reactive bands with different electrophoretic behaviour were observed for S. dairensis, S. exiguus, S. kluyveri, S. unisporus and also for the species moved from Sacchromyces to Arxiozyma, Kluyveromyces, Pachytichospora, Torulaspora and Zygosaccharomyces, in contrast to ascosporous yeasts of other genera in which these proteins were not found.

Explains how 17 graduate students in educational administration carried out multiple interviews with practising school administrators concerning their personal biography, professional biography and a discrete incident of professional practice. Reports the findings that novices did get to hear about some of the grey areas in which educational administrators typically operate. The stories provided basic assumptions and details about how experienced administrators performed in specific situations and circumstances and illustrated some of the explicit rules used by administrators to manage problems as well as the more tacit knowledge and assumptions embedded in practice. States that this led students to reflect on their own approaches to practice.
