    Notes: Abstract Observations have shown that, prior to substorm explosions, thin current sheets are formed in the plasma sheet of the Earth’s magnetotail. This provokes the question, to what extent current-sheet thinning and substorm onsets are physically, maybe even causally, related. To answer this question, one has to understand the plasma stability of thin current sheets. Kinetic effects must be taken into account since particle scales are reached in the course of tail current-sheet thinning. We present the results of theoretical investigations of the stability of thin current sheets and about the most unstable mode of their decay. Our conclusions are based upon a non-local linear dispersion analysis of a cross-magnetic field instability of Harris-type current sheets. We found that a sausage-mode bulk current instability starts after a sheet has thinned down to the ion inertial length. We also present the results of three-dimensional electromagnetic PIC-code simulations carried out for mass ratios up to Mi/me = 64. They verify the linearly predicted properties of the sausage mode decay of thin current sheets in the parameter range of interest.

    Notes: Abstract The plasma-wave experiment ASPI (analysis of spectra of plasma waves and instabilities) on board the INTERBALL spacecraft is a combined wave diagnostics experiment. It performs measurements of the DC and AC magnetic field vector by flux-gate and searchcoil sensors, the DC and AC electric field vector by Langmuir double probes and the plasma current by Langmuir split probe. Preliminary data analysis shows the low noise levels of the sensors and the compatibility of new data with the results of previous missions. During several months of in-orbit operation a rich collection of data was acquired, examples of which at the magnetopause and plasma sheet are presented in second part of the paper.

    Notes: Abstract Using the Equator-S spacecraft and SuperDARN HF radars an extensive survey of bursty reconnection at the magnetopause and associated flows in the polar ionosphere has been conducted. Flux transfer event (FTE) signatures were identified in the Equator-S magnetometer data during periods of magnetopause contact in January and February 1998. Assuming the effects of the FTEs propagate to the polar ionosphere as geomagnetic field-aligned-currents and associated Alfveén-waves, appropriate field mappings to the fields-of-view of SuperDARN radars were performed. The radars observed discrete ionospheric flow channel events (FCEs) of the type previously assumed to be related to pulse reconnection. Such FCEs were associated with ∼80% of the FTEs and the two signatures are shown to be statistically associated with greater than 99% confidence. Exemplary case studies highlight the nature of the ionospheric flows and their relation to the high latitude convection pattern, the association methodology, and the problems caused by instrument limitations.

    Notes: The problem of Harris current sheet stability is investigated. A linear dispersion relation in the long-wavelength limit is derived for instabilities, propagating in the neutral plane at an arbitrary angle to the magnetic field but symmetric across the sheet. The role of electrostatic perturbations is especially investigated. It appears, that for the tearing-mode instability electrostatic effects are negligible. However, for obliquely propagating modes the modulation of the electrostatic potential φ is essential. In order to verify the theoretical results, the limiting cases of tearing and sausage instabilities are compared to the two-dimensional (2D) Vlasov code simulations. For tearing the agreement between theory and simulations is good for all mass ratios. For sausage-modes, the theory predicts fast stabilization for mass ratios mi/me≥10. This is not observed in simulations due to the diminishing of the wavelength for higher mass ratios, which leads beyond the limit of applicability of the theory developed here. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Reconnection is the most efficient way to release the energy accumulated in the tense astrophysical magnetoplasmas. As such it is a basic paradigm of energy conversion in the universe. Astrophysical reconnection is supposed to heat plasmas to high temperatures, it drives fast flows, winds and jets, it accelerates particles and leads to structure formation. Reconnection can take place only after a local breakdown of the plasma ideality, enabling a change of the magnetic connection between plasma elements. After Giovanelli first suggested magnetoplasma discharges in 1946, reconnection has usually been identified with vanishing magnetic field regions. However, for the last ten years a discussion has been going on about the structure of 3 D reconnection, e.g., whether in 3 D it is possible also without magnetic nulls or not. We first shortly review the relevant magnetostatic and kinematic fluid theory results to argue than that a kinetic approach is necessary to reveal the generic three-dimensional structure and dynamics of reconnection in collisionless astrophysical plasmas. We present results about the 3 D structure of kinetic reconnection in initially antiparallel magnetic fields. They were obtained by selfconsistently considering ion and electron inertia as well as dissipative wave-particle resonances. In this approach reconnection is a natural consequence of the instability of thin current sheets. We present the results of a nonlocal linear dispersion theory and describe the nonlinear evolution of the instability using numerical particle code simulations. The decay of thin current sheets directly leads to a configurational instability and three-dimensional dynamic reconnection. We report the resulting generic magnetic field structure. It contains pairs of magnetic nulls, connected by separating magnetic flux surfaces through which the plasma flows and along which reconnection induces large parallel electric fields. Our results are illustrated by virtual reality views and movies, both stored on the attached CD-ROM and also being available from the Internet.
