Notes: Abstract Four Spanish children with clinical and radiological features corresponding to dysosteosclerosis are presented. All the children were male and belonged to the same family. The first known carrier is the maternal grand-mother, who had three daughters by three different fathers who in turn had one or more sons with the disease. The four carriers were normal. Consanguinity did not occur in any case and the disorder was transmitted as a sex-linked recessive condition.

Notes: Peak histamine concentrations of 0.023, 0.031 and 0.027 g histamine/100 g muscle and maximal bacteria concentrations of 1.75, 1.59 and 0.423 g dry cells/100 g muscle were observed in muscles of jack mackerel stored at 25, 15 and 5C, respectively. Incubated fish homogenates suggest rate and transport limitations in histamine formation in muscle. The Mulchandani model predicted bacterial growth in muscle. The Luedeking and Piret expression fitted histamine formation in muscle; α values were 3.0 × 10−3, 1.23 × 10−2 and 4.17 × 10−2 g histamine/g dry cells, while β-values were 4.5 × 104, 8.0 × 10−5 and 0 g histamine/g dry cells × h at 25, 15, and 5C, respectively. The model predicts that jack mackerel could be stored from 4.5 to 5.5 days in ice, from 1 to 2 days at 15C and from 17 h to 2 days at 25C before fishmeal quality might be affected.

Notes: Methadone elimination half-life was determined in 18 patients under maintenance treatments and found to range from 2.05 to 49.6 h. A study of potential correlations between this parameter and the presence of concomitant drugs, inhibitors or inducers of cytochrome P450, revealed an increase or decrease of methadone elimination half-life, respectively. Twenty-four-hour urinary excretion of methadone was determined in three patients, who were found to release 22.3–49.8% of the dose taken. The amount excreted varied with the chemical form (unaltered drug or its main metabolite) in the three cases. No statistically significant correlation was found between urine pH and the elimination half-life (p 〈 0.50).

Notes: Abstract Sixty-seven cases (41 males and 26 females) of arachnoidal cysts in children under 11 years are reported. About 53% of cases were diagnosed before 1 year of life. Thirty-one (42.2%) were supratentorial (interhemispheric 9, temporal fossa 10, convexity 5, sylvian fissure 3, supra- and/or retrosellar 4); 31 (46.2%) infratentorial (supra- and/or retrocerebellar 22, foramen of Magendie 3, quadrigeminal cistern 5, pontocerebellar 1); 5 (7.5%) supra-and infratentorial. Macrocephaly was the presenting symptom in 48 cases (71.5%). Associated features were frequent: cranial asymmetry in 24; aqueductal stenosis in 10; agenesis of corpus callosum in 8; deficient cerebellar lobullation in 4; Chiari I malformation in 2; neurofibromatosis type 1 with dysgenetic zones of the brain in 1; arteriovenous malformation in 1. Diagnosis was made at autopsy in six cases in the days before computed tomography and magnetic resonance: three patients had a cyst in the supra-and retrocerebellar midline; two had a cyst in the quadrigeminal cistern and the sixth was a rare case with the cyst passing from the posterior fossa to the left lateral ventricle through a hole in the basal surface of the brain. Small and some middle-sized cysts were not treated. Big and some middle-sized cysts were usually treated by cysto- and/or ventriculoperitoneal shunts. Arachnoidal cysts of the quadrigeminal cistern usually present with aqueductal stenosis and have to be treated with ventriculoperitoneal shunt. Craniotomy and fenestration of the cysts were performed in some cases with good results. The average mental level of these children is usually moderately low.

Notes: Summary Some mobile phase optimization methods have been used in developing a Reversed-Phase High-Performance Liquid Chromatography methodology for the determination of related impurities in bulk pharmaceutical steroids. Using two different approaches with binary and ternary mobile phase, the complete separation of 9-α-fluoroprednisolone acetate and its main potential impurities, at low concentration levels, has been achieved. This methodology may be applicable to other steroidal drugs and it is presented as an alternative to the thin-layer chromatography currently prescribed in official methods.
