Notes: [Auszug] In the present investigation good single crystals of a-silicon carbide (6H) were chosen by X-ray examination. These were heated in an induction furnace to temperatures of about 2,050 C.-2,150 C. for 1 hr., in a vacuum of 10~5 mm. mercury. Details of the graphitization furnace, developed by Dr. R. ...

Notes: [Auszug] X-ray diffraction photographs (Fig. 1) taken of bundles of these fibres suggest that they consist of graphite crystallites about 50 Å in size calculated from the line breadth of the (002) reflexion using the Scherrer equation and that the basal planes are highly oriented along the fibre axis, ...

Notes: Abstract Factors influencing the sealing characteristics of gaskets made from asbestos-reinforced rubbers include mechanical properties, thermal properties and moisture absorption characteristics. Existing knowledge of the temperature dependence of the mechanical behaviour has been augmented by investigations of the specific heat capacity, thermal expansion and thermal conductivity at temperatures up to 250° C, as well as moisture absorption characteristics at ambient temperature of as-prepared and thermally cycled material. The measurements have provided an insight into thermally induced structural changes within the matrix, which are relevant to component operation.

Notes: [Auszug] We used an X-ray diffraction technique based on the measurement of the integrated area under the (002) peak of chrysotile. The equipment, which consisted of a Phillips 1010 generator, a vertical goniometer with a step scanning attachment, and a proportional counter with pulse height discrimination, ...

Notes: Abstract Modifications to the structure of filaments of 6.6 nylon, due to extension at various rates, have been investigated by optical and X-ray methods. Stable changes in the density and the principal X-ray spacings have been observed together with a reversible transition, during extension, of the kind noted byBrill.

Notes: Abstract The principal linear thermal expansion coefficients of chrysotile asbestos have been measured over the approximate temperature range 80 to 270 K. Implications of the results on: (i) the influence of thermal strain upon the specific heat capacity, and (ii) the temperature variation of the reduced volume dependence of the lattice vibrational frequencies have been assessed as far as available ancillary data permit. The principal linear thermal expansion coefficents of specimens prepared from composite bars consisting of phenol formaldehyde resin reinforced with chrysotile fibre in random and preferential dispositions, have also been measured over this temperature range. An appraisal of the results in the neighbourhood of ambient temperature has been undertaken in terms of a simple structural model. It transpires that a satisfactory account of the thermal expansion results for the composites is provided in terms of the thermal and elastic properties of the constituents for directions parallel to the pressing directions. The limited ancillary data available leave the principal causes of the less satisfactory agreement in directions at right angles to the pressing directions an open question, though a suggestion is advanced concerning the direction which further investigations might take in order to resolve this uncertainty.

Notes: Characterization measurements of a commercial phenol-formaldehyde resin prepared from constituents including phenol and formaldehyde in the molar ratio 1:1.33 are reported. The measurements consist of (1) the linear thermal expansion coefficient between approximately 85 and 270°K; (2) the specific heat capacity between approximately 6 and 100°K; (3) the Young's modulus at room temperature. A critical examination of the data reveals that: (1) the vibrational behavior is predominantly that of a three-dimensional assembly; (2) as far as data available from other sources permit an assessment to be made, the principle of additivity appears to be applicable to the specific heat capacity between approximately 50 and 100°K; and (3) the data lie near the limit of an empirical relationship observed between the Young's modulus and linear thermal expansion coefficient of other polymers.
