Notes: Abstract CNDO calculations have been used to obtain the one-centre core integrals for protonated azines required in calculating the π→π * absorption spectra of such molecules using the PPP method. Calculated spectra for both the parent and the protonated molecules are obtained in satisfactory agreement with experiment. The changes in the σ-framework of the molecules on protonation are also discussed in terms of the CNDO results.

Notes: Abstract Data from the National Longitudinal Study of the High School Class of 1972 were drawn to compare those who transfer from two-year colleges and those who enroll in four-year institutions immediately after high school. The comparisons were made on background variables, individual characteristics, and financial aid status. Results indicated that transfers came from lower SES families, and had lower academic ability, high school achievement, and educational aspiration than native students. Transfers were less likely than native students to receive scholarships, fellowships, or grants, and they showed lower achievement in the year after transfer. Implications of these findings are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The taxa in this study have in the past been treated together in sect.Tiniaria Meissner ofPolygonum L. s.l., and more recently the large erect rhizomatous herbaceous perennials have been separated from the twining annuals and perennials as the generaReynoutria andFallopia respectively. These taxa range in ploidy level from diploid to octoploid, with base numbers of both 10 and 11 present. The plants are primarily Asiatic in distribution, although many of the large erect perennials are now naturalized in many parts of Europe. Cytological examination has revealed the presence of a number of previously unknown hybrid taxa in the British Isles. The readiness with which hybridisation occurs between taxa of differing base number and ploidy level, and similarities revealed in chromosome morphology, meiotic pairing and in DNA C-value, suggest to the authors that these two genera are best amalgamated underFallopia.

Notes: Abstract Giemsa C-banding patterns of the grassesFestuca rubra (2n = 6x = 42),Vulpia fasciculata (2n = 4x = 28) and their wild F1 hybrid ×Festulpia hubbardii (2n = 5x = 35) show marked differences between the chromosomes of the two parents that enable unequivocal identification ofFestuca andVulpia chromosomes in the hybrid. Moreover, meiotic banding patterns reveal that both homogenetic (Festuca-Festuca andVulpia-Vulpia) and heterogenetic (Festuca-Vulpia) pairing occurs in the F1. The significance of this in relation to the formation of backcrosses to theFestuca parent and to the evolution of theFestuca polyploid complex in general is discussed.

Notes: Explants of human synovialis obtained surgically were cultivated under dialysis membrane in the multipurpose Rose chamber and in Eagle's medium enriched with 20% pooled human cord sera. Within 24 hours monocytes and lymphocytic cells emerged from the majority of explants while spindle and stellate cells appeared later on the second and third days of culture. A monolayer of cells developed in which active mitosis was observed. Between 12 to 15 days, fingerlike projections of cells adjacent to the explants branched out between the cover glass and the monolayer of mesenchymelike growth and by the twenty-fifth day had developed into anastomosing networks eventually ranging in length from 1.2 to 3.2 mm. Ciné and still phase photomicrographs decumented findings. Vascular networks developed in vitro in 85% of the total 80 Rose chambers examined over an average period of 58 days. Minute vessels, patent for only short distances, were lined with endothelial cells characterized by slender elongated nuclei and with two or three small nucleoli. In contrast, flanking fibroblasts were considerably larger with clear oval nuclei containing conspicuous nucleoli. Differential stains demonstrated reticular fibers and distinct bundles of collagen lying along the vessels, particularly in the area adjacent to the fragment. In the study of rheumatoid arthritis, where vascular lesions are known to occur, it is possible that such preparations may provide favorable test objects.
