Notes: Summary Compilation and analysis of all bacterial sequences which are aligned by their transcription initiation sites show a dramatic behavior of the four nucleotides. Large peaks of T and A are observed. This highly nonrandom distribution is likely to affect the DNA geometry in addition to affecting the strength of binding between the two DNA strands. Following this site, the G and C rise above their overall bacterial mean. Alignment by transcription termination sites indicates that this behavior continues till the mRNA 3′ termini. At this site the concentrations of A and T rise again above the mean. Analysis of the distributions of the 256 quartets in the 1000 nucleotide regions surrounding both transcription initiation and termination sites has been carried out. Some A/T combination sequences may serve as signals to the bacterial transcription machinery, in addition to the well-established T T G A C A and T A T A A T at positions −35 and −10, respectively, and a run of Ts at the transcription termination site. The frequent occurrences of (dA)/(dT) runs in the vicinity of these sites may result in curved DNA structures, affecting recognition and the nature of the interaction between the RNA polymerase and the DNA.

Notes: Abstract The lattice parameters of anorthites An98Ab2 and An100 have been measured from 22 to 1100 K. The spontaneous strain arising from the $$I\overline 1 - P\overline 1$$ displacive transition in An98 follows second order Landau behaviour. The spontaneous strain (ɛ s) couples quadratically to the order parameter (Q 0) with ɛ s∝Q 02∝(T c * −T) and T c * =530 K in An98. This is in contrast to the tricritical behaviour observed in pure anorthite. These observations are consistent with a Landau model for the free energy of Ca-rich plagioclases in which Al/Si order and Na content renormalize the fourth order coefficient.

Notes: Abstract The kinetic rate laws of Al-Si disordering under dry conditions (T = 1353K, 1253 K, 1223 K, 1183 K) and in the presence of water (p = 1 kbar, T = 1023 K, 1073 K, 1103 K) were studied both experimentally and theoretically. A gradual change of the degree of order was found under dry conditions. For intermediate degrees of order broad distributions of the order parameter Q od occur. The variations of Q od are correlated with structural modulations as observed in the transmission electron microscope. The time evolution of the mean value of Q od can be well described by the rate law: $$\frac{{dQ_{od} }}{{dt}} = - \frac{\gamma }{{RT}}\exp \sum\limits_{i = 1}^n {X_i^2 } \left[ {\frac{{ - (G_a^0 + \varepsilon (\Delta Q_{od} )^2 )}}{{RT}}} \right]\frac{{dG}}{{dQ_{od} }}$$ with the excess Gibbs energy G and G a 0 = 433.8 kJ/mol, ɛ= -27.4 kJ/mol, γ = 1.687 · 1014 h −1. Under wet conditions, two processes were found which occur simultaneously. Firstly, some material renucleated with the equilibrium degree of order. Secondly, the bulk of the material transformed following the same rate law as under dry conditions but with the reduced activation energy G a 0 = 332.0 kJ/mol and ɛ = -43.0 kJ/ mol, γ = 1.047 · 1013 h−1. The applicability of the kinetic theory is discussed and some ideas for the analysis of geological observations are evolved.

Notes: Abstract A sequence similarity has been found between two segments of endothiapepsin (acid proteinase, 2APE), bovine pancreatic ribonuclease A, and peptide T, a segment of the gp120 protein of human inmmune deficiency virus (HIV), which has been implicated in blocking viral attachment to the T4 receptor. The two similar sequences of the acid proteinase enzyme are Leu-Ile-Asp-Ser-Ser-Ala-Tyr-Thr (residues 169–176) and Tyr-Thr-Gly-Ser-Leu-Asn-Tyr-Thr (residues 175–182). Since the X-ray crystallographic structures of the acid proteinase and ribonuclease are known, it has been possible to determine whether the three-dimensional structures of the segments are similar. Portions of both of the segments of acid proteinase are directly superimposable on the structure of the RNase A 19–26 segment. The fact that the three similar sequences from two completely unrelated proteins give rise to almost identical structures raises the possibility that these segments may be involved in nucleating the folding of these proteins. In addition, this provides further support for the concept that the octapeptide sequence of peptide T of HIV, which is also similar in sequence to the 19–26 sequence of RNase A, is also structurally similar to these residues, which adopt a β-bend conformation. Furthermore, comparison of similarities and differences in the structure of these similar sequences provides an explanation for alterations in the biological activity of various truncated or substituted derivatives of peptide T and additional confirmation of the structural requirements for peptide T in T4-receptor recognition.
