Notes: Summary The extraction of iron as ferric chloride in 7 M hydrochloric acid by a mixture of (1+1) or (2+1) methyl isobutyl ketone and amyl acetate is quantitative for macro as well as for micro amounts of iron. The distribution ratio is very high (∼ 4000). With these mixtures no emulsification difficulties are encountered as they are with methyl isobutyl ketone alone. The behaviour of 44 elements in this extraction has been investigated.

Notes: Summary The iodometric determination of copper in fluoride solution has been investigated with regard to interference or non-interference by a large number of elements. Elements that interfere are: gold, palladium, platinum and vanadium. A number of elements interfere in one valency state but not after an easily performed oxidation or reduction. Barium does not interfere if first precipitated as sulphate. The interference of calcium and strontium is only partially eliminated by precipitation as sulphate. In the presence of more than 20 mg of aluminium titration has to be carried out in a tartrate-fluoride solution at a pH between 1.5 and 2.5. This procedure has been applied succesfully to the determination of copper in aluminium alloys.

Notes: Summary Many procedures for the determination of vanadium in iron and steel yield high results with low contents of vanadium in samples containing chromium. This has been shown to be due to the presence of phosphoric acid in the steel solution during the oxidation with permanganate, leading to oxidation of trivalent chromium. A potentiometric procedure has been developed, based on an old method of Willard and Young in which hydrofluoric acid is used to complex tungsten instead of phosphoric acid. This procedure allows the determination of vanadium from 0.001% upwards in any kind of iron or steel without separations. The proposed procedure has been tested with a large number of standard steels.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary This paper deals with flexible single-element analysis using inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). Some non-routine problems encountered in the daily practice of an analytical service group in a research laboratory of a large electronic industry were handled with ICP-AES and — when rational — also with wet-chemical techniques including atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). The analyses covered micro and macro samples and involved the determination of trace constituents: Ni in a CrO3-sulphuric acid etching liquid, Sn in 18% sulphuric acid, and B in TiO2 powder; a minor constituent: Cr in Mg-ferrite; major constituents: Sm and Co in an Sm-Co alloy, Fe, Al and Si in a thin Fe-Al-Si layer, B and Li in LiBF4, Si in thin Si3N4 layers, and Y and Eu in a thin Y2O3-Eu2O3 layer. The power of ICPAES as an analytical tool for solving a variety of nonroutine analytical problems with a relatively simple spectroscopic approach and little chemical treatment of the sample solutions became quite evident.

Notes: Summary A detailed investigation has been made of the gravimetric determination of nickel with dimethylglyoxime in the presence of copper. Copper interference is eliminated by precipitation in a solution containing tartrate and thiosulphate at a pH of 5.5–6.5. The solubility of the nickel dimethylglyoxime complex has been determined as a function of temperature, pH and alcohol concentration.

Notes: Summary Two procedures for the photometric determination of copper as the diethyldithiocarbamate complex have been investigated as to their selectivity. In the first procedure—extraction by chloroform from a citrate solution ofph about 8.5, containing EDTA—the following elements interfere: HgII, Ag, Au, Pt, Pd, Os, SbIII, TeIV, TlIII and Bi. Interference by HgII, Ag, Pd, SbIII, TeIV and TlIII can be prevented by simple measures. In the second procedure—extraction by a solution of lead diethyldithiocarbamate in chloroform from ammoniacal citrate-only Ag, TlIII, Bi and HgII interfere. Interference by the first three elements can be prevented easily, leaving as the only serious interference in this method mercury in amounts above 500 Μg.
