Summary Following a short historical survey and based on the numerous investigations performed by means of the electrodermatogram as indicated byRegelsberger (1931) —whose often contradictory results were published mainly in the last 15 years—the electrobiological principles of the electrodermatogram (EDG) are discussed. Clinical and pharmacological observations reveal that for practical-clinical purposes the moistening of the skin and consequently the activity of the perspiratory glands system determines the value of the apparent d.-c. resistance, or more exactly, of the skin conductivity. Judging from physiological and neuropathological data the perspiratio insensibilis, whose physiological base has not yet been definitely explained but which seems to represent a mere physical process (Rutenfranz, Bykow), has no significance with respect to the interpretation of the bioelectrical effects in contrast toRegelsberger's conception. Results of recent investigations of the neuronic structure of the vegetative nervous system and of the separate position of the sudomotoric apparatus within the vegetative nervous system beside parasympathicus, sympathicus and intramural ganglia show that it is no longer justified to infer a sympathicotonus of the whole organism from a high conductivity or a low resistance of the skin, respectively, or to infer a parasympathicus in general from a low conductivity or a high resistance of the skin. The terminal reticullum and its activity which, afterRegelsberger's conception, imparts central pulses to the epithelium, which leads to the emission of a liquid, is contradictory to our modern neurohistological and physiological conceptions. It is not denied that changes in the permeability of the individual cells may exert an influence on the electrical behaviour of the skin (Lullies, Diehl, Schaefer), their clinical importance, however, may be neglected, as clinical and pharmacological examinations reveal. Thus the data given byRegelsberger's electrodermatogram have a limited diagnostic value; only investigations based immediately on the secretion of sweat have proved to be useful. Consequently the electrodermatogram is used in neurology to determine passive regions of the skin after peripherous lesions of the nerves, to check the successful elimination of the truncus sympathicus; it is used in internal medicine to measure the acral districal resistance in cases of angiopathies, and it is used in the physiology of labour for studies of heat regulation under bodily strain. Of theoretical rather than practical importance is the measuring of the characteristics in the different dermatomes (skin segments) in connection with the reflectory-algetic symptoms (according toHansen andv. Staa), as will be shown in another place.
