Notes: Summary The kinetics of aqueous polymerization of methacrylamide initiated by potassium persulphate-malonic acid redox pair has been investigated at 50±1°C under nitrogen atmosphere. The initial rate of polymerization has been found to be square root dependence to the initial concentration of potassium persulphate and malonic acid. The order of reaction with respect to monomer has been found to be unity. The overall energy of activation has been found to be 66±1 KJ/mol. The effect of addition of manganous sulphate and sulphuric acid has been investigated. On the basis of experimental results a suitable mechanism has been proposed.

Notes: The aqueous polymerization of acrylamide initiated by potassium permanganate/β-hydroxybutyric acid has been studied volumetrically at 35 ± 0.01°C in an inert medium. The rate of polymerization shows nearly square root dependence on β-hydroxybutyric acid at low concentration (3.12 - 12.5 · 10-3 mol dm-3). The order with respect to potassium permanganate has been found to be 0.6 indicating thereby a bimolecular mode of termination. The polymerization rate has been varied linearly at low monomer concentrations i.e. from 2.5 -7.0 · 10-2 mol dm-3. The dependence of number average degree of polymerization on the initial rate of polymerization and temperature has been determined. The over-all activation energy has been found to be 51.66 kJ mol-1. A kinetic reaction scheme is proposed on the basis of experimental results.

Description / Table of Contents: Die Polymerisation von Methacrylamid wurde in wäßriger Phase unter Verwendung von Persulfat/Äpfelsäure und Persulfat/Ethanolamin als Redox-Systeme unter Stickstoff untersucht.
Notes: The aqueous polymerization of methacrylamide was studied by using persulphate/malic acid and persulphate/ethanolamine redox pairs under nitrogen atmosphere. The order with respect to persulphate was found to be one half with both the redox systems. Malic acid and ethanolamine show half order and zero order, respectively. Methacrylamide has first order dependence on the rate of polymerization initiated by K2S2O8-malic acid system and one and half order dependence on the rate of polymerization initiated by K2S2O8-ethanolamine redox pair. Viscometric average molecular weight was determined for the samples obtained under different kinetic conditions.

Description / Table of Contents: Die Polymerisation von Methacrylamid bei Initiierung mit dem Redoxsystem Kaliumpersulfat/Mercaptoethanol wurde untersucht.
Notes: The polymerization of methacrylamide initiated by the redox system potassium persulphate/2-mercaptoethanol has been studied. The order of the reaction with respect to methacrylamide was found to be one with deviation at higher concentration of the monomer. At optimum concentration of potassium persulphate and 2-mercaptoethanol the order of the polymerization reaction is 0.5 with respect to both persulphate and 2-mercaptoethanol. The effect of the polymerization conditions on the intrinsic viscosities and the influence of additives on the rate of polymerization were investigated.
