Notes: Liquid-solid fluidization characteristics of irregularly shaped Biobone particles were studied in a fluidized bioreactor column 2.35 m high and 0.1 m dia. The wet biobone particles had a density of 1,890 kg/m3. Two size ranges were studied: 1.70-2.36 mm and 1.25-2.36 mm. The Biobone is a natural cheap material composed of collagen, which is a strong protein structure, embedded with microcrystals of hydroxyapatite and calcium phosphate, and it is an excellent matrix of commercial importance used for the immobilization of enzymes, whole cells and other biocatalysts. Fluidization characteristics of Biobone particles, which include measurements of pressure drops, holdups, minimum fluidization velocities, particle entrainment, and residence time distributions at different water superficial velocities, are reported. Because of the highly irregular shape of Biobone particles, new fluidization behavior was observed, which was much different from the fluidization behavior of spherical particles reported in the literature. A new channeling index, Ic, is proposed to quantify the channeling characteristics of fluidized Biobone particles, and a new parameter, α, was developed to distinguish the transition between fixed and fluidized states of the Biobone particles.

Notes: A model describing the entrainment of solid particles from gas-fluidized beds of mixed-size particles is proposed. It was tested with the limited experimental data published to date and was shown to be superior to existing models and correlations. The model demonstrates that the concentration of very fine particles in the bed can have a significant effect on entrainment.

Notes: Spirulina maxima, a high protein alga, was grown in effluents from the London municipal waste treatment plant. Optimum growth conditions were developed, the composition of algae and the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus in effluents were studied. The advantages of this process in tertiary waste-water treatment and the quality of the single cell protein were investigated.

Notes: Fast circulating fluidized-bed reactors are used for many applications, both in riser and downer modes. Typical resisdence times are in the order of a few hundreds of milliseconds. A good understanding of initial gas-solids contact must be reached to realize the full potential of such reactors. Effective and stable gas-solids mixing chambers were identified from the singals of simple and robust probes, which could be used in industrial and pilot plants. Criteria based on cross correlation or Hurst analysis provided consistent results. Although this study used simplified momentum probes, the criteria it developed can be applied to the signal of any fast-response sensor which is affected by local hydrodynamics. Temperature, capacitance, ultrasonic, or γ-ray absorption measurements could be used. Gas or liquid-liquid mixing chambers could also be optimized with the same criteria.
