    Notes: A nonequilibrium thermodynamic theory for predicting the mechanical behavior of materials beyond the elastic range is formulated. The theory incorporates the idea of a "concealed'' parameter α, originally due to Bridgman [Rev. Mod. Phys. 22, 56 (1950)], where the constitutive equations are governed by (a) a thermodynamic potential such as a generalized Gibbs function, G, or Helmholtz free-energy function, F, each with an explicit dependence on α, and (b) a prescription for α(overdot), the time rate of change of α, such that α(overdot) is directly proportional to the negative of Gα or Fα, the partial derivative of G or F with respect to α, respectively. The theory is found to be consistent with (1) the second law of thermodynamics regarding entropy production; (2) the concept of Lyapunov stability at equilibrium; (3) the rule of invariance with respect to a transformation of parameters; and (4) the powerful law of invariance with respect to the Legendre transformation. Significance of the new formulation is discussed by solving a class of one-dimensional creep and fatigue modeling problems and by comparing the new theory with several similar approaches in the literature.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Une méthode générale non itérative est développée pour résoudre des problèmes aux limites non linéaires contenant un paramètre. La dérivation du système différentiel par rapport au paramètre transforme le problème en un problème aux valeurs initiales, où la variable indépendante est le paramètre et où la dérivation par rapport à la variable d'origine est complètement éliminée. L'intégration du nouveau système par rapport au paramètre est menée pas à pas et conduit à une famille de solutions qui peuvent être d'intérêt pratique si le paramètre a une signification physique. La méthode est appliquée à l'étude de l'écoulement laminaire d'un fluide dans un tube annulaire à parois uniformément perméables. La variable d'intégration est le nombre de Reynolds de transpiration et la déviation par rapport à l'écoulement de Poiseuille peut être déterminée à chaque pas d'intégration.
    Notes: Abstract A general noniterative method of solution of nonlinear boundary value problems involving a parameter is presented. Through a parametric differentiation of the original system, the boundary value problem is converted into an initial value problem with the parameter as the independent variable and differentiation with respect to the original variable is completely eliminated. A step by step integration with respect to the parameter of the newly obtained initial value system yields a large family of solutions which may be of practical interest when the parameter chosen is of physical significance. The method is applied to study the effect of uniform wall suction and injection on the laminar flow in an annulus. The integration is carried out with respect to the transpiration Reynolds number and the deviation from the Poiseuille flow can be seen at each step of integration.

    Notes: Abstract A thermodynamics is developed for a unified theory of elasticity and plasticity in infinitesmal strain. The constitutive equations which relate stress and strain deviators are rate type differential equations. When they satisfy a Lipschitz condition, uniqueness for the initial value problem dictates that the stress and strain will be related through elastic relations. Failure of the Lipschitz condition occurs when a von Mises yield condition is achieved: Plastic yield then occurs and the deviator relations turn into the Prandtl-Reuss equations. The plastic yield solution is stable during loading and unstable during unloading. The requirement that the solution followed during unloading be stable dictates entry into an elastic regime. Appropriate thermodynamic functions are constructed. It then appears that stress deviator (not strain deviator) is a viable state variable, and the thermodynamic relations are constructed in terms of a Gibbs function. The energy balance leads to satisfaction of the Clausius-Duhem inequality (and thus the second law of thermodynamics) in an elastic regime because it is shown that in an elastic regime entropy production is caused only by heat flux. During yield, the proper method of differentiating yields entropy production terms in addition to those arising from heat flux. These terms are positive during loading, whence it is concluded that the requirement that a stable solution be followed leads to satisfaction of the Clausius-Duhem inequality during plastic as well as elastic behavior.

    Notes: Flows of fluids with single-integral memory functionals are considered. Evaluation of the stress at a material point involves the deformation history of that point, and a dominant computational cost in finite element approximation is the construction of streamlines. It is shown that the simple crossed-triangle macro-element is in many ways an ideal finite element for the difficult non-linear, non-self-adjoint problem. The question as to whether this element produces convergent velocity and pressure solutions is addressed in the light of its failure to satisfy the discrete LBB condition. The effect of the element's ill-disposed (‘spurious’) pressure modes is discussed, and a pressure smoothing scheme is given which gives good results in Newtonian and non-Newtonian flows at various Reynolds and Deborah numbers. As an example of the element's success in modelling such flows, the problem of pressure differences in flows over transverse slots is studied numerically. The results are compared with experimental observations of such flows. The effect of fluid memory on the relation between first normal-stress differences and pressure differences is investigated.
