    Notes: Summary. We estimate condition numbers of $p$ -version matrices for tensor product elements with two choices of reference element degrees of freedom. In one case (Lagrange elements) the condition numbers grow exponentially in $p$ , whereas in the other (hierarchical basis functions based on Tchebycheff polynomials) the condition numbers grow rapidly but only algebraically in $p$ . We conjecture that regardless of the choice of basis the condition numbers grow like $p^{4d}$ or faster, where $d$ is the dimension of the spatial domain.

    Notes: Abstract This note addresses a problem of nineteenth century applied mathematics—is it possible in the context of Hamiltonian mechanics to define a functionS of the generalized coordinates and momenta which is monotonically increasing along orbits? The question is of interest, because, for a sytem not in thermodynamic equilibrium, entropy should increase strictly monotonically along an orbit, and a negative answer implies that mechanical principles different from those of Hamiltonian mechanics must be introduced to explain thermodynamics. This note answers the question rigorously for Hamiltonian systems confined to an invariant region of finite volume in phase space; it is not possible to define a continuous function which increases monotonically along orbits. An appendix gives a translation of an 1889 paper of Poincaré addressing the same issue.

    Notes: Flows of fluids with single-integral memory functionals are considered. Evaluation of the stress at a material point involves the deformation history of that point, and a dominant computational cost in finite element approximation is the construction of streamlines. It is shown that the simple crossed-triangle macro-element is in many ways an ideal finite element for the difficult non-linear, non-self-adjoint problem. The question as to whether this element produces convergent velocity and pressure solutions is addressed in the light of its failure to satisfy the discrete LBB condition. The effect of the element's ill-disposed (‘spurious’) pressure modes is discussed, and a pressure smoothing scheme is given which gives good results in Newtonian and non-Newtonian flows at various Reynolds and Deborah numbers. As an example of the element's success in modelling such flows, the problem of pressure differences in flows over transverse slots is studied numerically. The results are compared with experimental observations of such flows. The effect of fluid memory on the relation between first normal-stress differences and pressure differences is investigated.
