Notes: Norepinephrine and dopamine concentrations were determined by radioenzymatic assay in discrete gray matter regions of the spinal cords of rats with experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE). Norepinephrine was depleted in most spinal cord regions of EAE rats compared with controls, whereas dopamine depletion in EAE rats was restricted to the cervical dorsal horn. There was a rostrocaudal gradient of norepinephrine reduction in the spinal cords of the EAE rats with most severe depletion in the lumbar region. The results of this experiment confirmed recent anatomical observations that suggested that catecholamine-fluorescent axons and terminals were damaged in spinal cords of rats with EAE.

Notes: Abstract: A modified filtration method for in vitro receptor binding was used to determine specific binding of [3H]naloxone to small regions of adult rat brain. Reliable determinations of ligand binding were quantified with about 50 μg of protein per assay tube. Large differences in [3H]naloxone binding were obtained between various brain nuclei, and these differences were consistent with prior determinations of opiate receptor densities in various rat brain nuclei using autoradiographic techniques.

Notes: Tyrosine hydroxylase activity correlated significantly with norepinephrine concentration and turnover, when results from regions containing predominantly noradrenergic terminals were compared, and with dopamine concentration and turnover when results from regions containing predominantly dopaminergic terminals were compared. Regions containing dopamine or norepinephrine cell bodies were characterized by higher tyrosine hydroxylase activities as compared to regions containing mostly nerve terminals. Higher levels of tyrosine hydroxylase activity and transmitter turnover were observed in regions containing dopaminergic terminals than in regions containing norepinephrine terminals. These findings are consistent with the view that tyrosine hydroxylase activity is linked to rates of catecholamine utilization by neurons in the CNS.

Notes: Clinical isolates of Neisseria gonorrhoeae are commonly subject to growth inhibition by phenylpyruvate or by L-phenylalanine. A blockade of tyrosine biosynthesis is indicated since inhibition is reversed by either L-tyrosine or 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate. Phenylalanine-resistant (PheR) and phenylalanine-sensitive (Phes) isolates both have a single 3-deoxy-D-arabino-heptulosonate 7-phosphate (DAHP) synthase that is partially inhibited by L-phenylalanine (80%). However, PheS and PheR isolates differ in that the ratio of phenylpyruvate aminotransferase to 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate aminotransferase is distinctly greater in PheS isolates than in PheR isolates. A mechanism for growth inhibition is proposed in which phenylalanine exerts two interactive effects, (i) Phenylalanine decreases precursor flow to 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate through its controlling effect upon DAHP synthase; and (ii) phenylalanine is largely transaminated to phenylpyruvate, which saturates both aminotransferases, preventing transamination of an already limited supply of 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate to L-tyrosine.

Notes: Abstract The binary mosquitocidal genes of 51-kDa and 42-kDa proteins isolated from Bacillus sphaericus 1593 have been expressed at moderate levels in Escherichia coli employing the pQE expression system. The expressed proteins are readily visible in Coomassie-blue-stained protein gels. The recombinant E. coli cells expressing toxic proteins were toxic towards Culex larvae. During the assembly of crystals in B. sphaericus, the 42-kDa toxin is first cleaved at the N-terminal end by a specific B. sphaericus protease. To express the toxins in E. coli the B.sphaericus specific protease-recognition site was deleted at the N-terminal end of the 42-kDa toxin, thereby mimicking the structure of the toxin as present in the crystal. This modification resulted in a twofold increase in the toxicity of the E. coli cells expressing the modified 42-kDa toxin as a constituent of the binary toxin. Our results demonstrate the utility of this modification for heterologous expression of the binary toxin genes from B. sphaericus.

Notes: Summary This paper supplements the earlier ones of this series, which dealt withstationary instabilities of cellular type and generalizes the case of planeCouette flow foroscillatory cellular disturbances, usually termed as “over-stability”. Using the well-known scheme of linearization the disturbance equations are derived and the analytical solutions have been given. By numerical evaluation of these, the curves of neutral stability are calculated explicitely for certain typical cases. It is found that, in general, the overstability mode is higher than the stationary mode but that both can come close to each other if certain conditions are satisfied.

Notes: Summary In continuation of an earlier investigation, the present paper discusses the stress distribution in the inertialess flow of a viscoelastic fluid confined between two plane parallel walls, in which the upper wall moves with a constant velocity while the lower is held at rest with a uniform constant suction applied on its surface. However, the stress field is discussed in detail for the case when the upper wall is also held at rest and the effects arising due to application of suction are pointed out. The most important difference in the behaviour of viscoelastic fluid, compared with that ofNewtonian fluid, lies in the fact that the gradient of the normal stress component in the horizontal direction depends on the distance from the walls. A short discussion has also been provided for the flow in a cylindrical tube with uniform constant suction applied on its surface. Though not evident from general considerations, it is seen that the situation here also is quite similar to that of plane flow.

Notes: Summary The problem of thermal boundary layer on a sphere rotating in an infinitely extendingRivlin-Ericksen fluid is investigated. The exact numerical solutions of the energy equation are provided for the case when the sphere is uniformly heated, treating the non-Newtonian parameters to be small. It is found that the effect of visco-elasticity of the fluid is to decrease the temperature in comparison to that for aNewtonian fluid. However, for a purely inelastic fluid, the temperature is seen to be less upto a certain distance from the surface of the sphere beyond which it is more compared to that for aNewtonian fluid. It is interesting to note that visco-elasticity increases the rate of heat transfer whereas the cross-viscosity reduces it.
