Abstract— Phospholipids, particularly phosphatidylcholine, are the main substrates for lipid peroxidation in rat brain mitochondria. The neutral lipids do not undergo peroxidation. The lipoproteins of mitochondria in their native form protect the phospholipids from auto-oxidation. The mitochondrial protein fraction stimulates peroxide formation presumably due to its surface active properties.
