    Notes: The operational principle of a new type p-i-i-n color sensor is described with the aid of numerical modeling. The modeling results account for the color detection mechanism recently presented that this kind of structure exhibits [T. Neidlinger, M. B. Schubert, G. Schmid, and H. Brummack, in Amorphous Silicon Technology—1996, edited by E. A. Schiff et al. (Materials Research Society, Pittsburgh, 1996), p. 147]. By band gap engineering the experimental red response is maximized at larger reverse bias voltage whereas the green response has its maximum at low reverse bias voltage. The numerical modeling qualitatively reproduces the characteristic shape of the steady-state current-voltage curves at different illumination wavelengths. At low and at high reverse bias voltages the influence of the internal variables and parameters is identified and leads to the experimentally observed response. The potential profile of the p-i-i-n structure is of crucial importance to the color detection mechanism. At larger wavelengths the large potential drop across the two highly defective front layers assists recombination in the back part of the device, which thus leads to the drop in the red response at low reverse voltage. For the voltage-dependent shift in spectral sensitivity it is important that photogenerated carriers under green bias illumination are lost by recombination in the front part of the device. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The ataxonomic phytoplankton composition and abundance (biomass classes) in lakes of differing acidity were examined by flow cytometry. The ataxonomic parameters applied here were photosynthesis pigments and cellular protein content. Up to 1000 cells per second can be assessed by this method. Consequently, enough cells to create biomass spectra can be counted within only a few minutes. Photosynthesis pigment autofluorescence was used to separate algal cells from detritus and to classify the phytoplankton organisms into different pigment groups. Chlorophyll fluorescence ratio (CFR) at different excitation wave lengths proved to be a sensitive tool. As expected, the diversity of CFR-determined pigment groups decreased with increasing acidification. Some groups were acid-insensitive and occurred even at pH below 3.0. However, picoplanktic cyanobacteria (Synechoccocus/Synechocystis-like particles [SLPs]) were absent at pHs below 4.5–4.0, with their accompanying high metal concentrations. Thus, the reappearance of cyanobacterial picoplankton may serve as a first major restoration goal in strongly acidified lakes. Protein staining using fluorescein isothiocyanate enables fast estimates of phytoplankton biomass and establishment of biomass spectra as an estimate of the integrity of plankton communities. Although the phytoplankton investigations presented are only snapshots of the situation on the sampling days, the feasibility of flow cytometrical methods for preparing phytoplankton biomass spectra has been demonstrated. The completeness of such biomass spectra, such as the presence or absence of SLP-picoplankters, as well as the variances around regression lines (linear or parabolic), may serve as goals in restoring lakes acidified to different degrees.

    Notes: We detect elastic optical scattering resulting from the surface roughness of nanocrystalline silicon by a poor optical grating in the steady-state photocarrier grating experiment. The small variation of the experimental sampling function reduces the reliability of the ambipolar diffusion length measurements in this case. We demonstrate that the reduction in surface roughness of nanocrystalline silicon by polishing reduces optical scattering, improves the grating quality, and allows a reliable determination of the ambipolar diffusion length, making the experiment attractive for characterizing nanocrystalline silicon and other semiconductors which exhibit optical scattering. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract A computer-controlled diode laser spectrometer for the 1200 to 2500 cm−1 spectral region is described. The spectrometer has been applied to high resolution spectroscopy of the NCO radical at 5.2 μm. The lead-salt diode lasers are cooled to their operating temperature with a temperature adjustable helium evaporation cryostat. Computer-controlled tuning procedures for the frequency tuning of the diode lasers have been developed; they are independent of tables describing the tuning characteristics of the diode lasers. 41 lines of the antisymmetric stretching-vibrationv 3 of the linear NCO radical have been observed. We were able to detect vibration-rotation transitions in both2 π 1/2 and2 π 3/2 fine structure sublevels. These measurements led to the precise determination of additional molecular constants.
