Notes: Summary A subpopulation (n=27) of normoglycaemic Sand rats was characterized as carbohydrateintolerant by intraperitoneal glucose loading. Five of these animals did not show any rise in peripheral insulin concentrations when injected with glucose. However, when isolated by collagenase digestion their islets still exhibited a significant enhancement of insulin secretion in response to glucose, glyceraldehyde, mannose and theophylline. The in vitro secretory responses were comparable to those of islets from carbohydrate-tolerant Sand rats. The results underline the importance of the natural environment for the B-cell response in vivo.

Notes: Summary The study examines the effects of sulfonylurea compounds on the histo- and ultracytochemical calcium distribution within the B-cells of mice using the glyoxal-bis-(2-hydroxyanil) (GBHA) and the pyroantimonate method combined with X-ray microanalysis. Treatment with tolbutamide (200 mg/kg), glibenclamide (2 mg/kg) and glisoxepide (2 mg/kg), causing moderate hypoglycemia and B-cell degranulation, was associated with an unchanged (30, 90 min) or slightly increased (180, 360 min, 4, 42 d) GBHA staining intensity of the islet cells compared with controls. Ultra-cytochemically sulfonylureas provoked, compared with controls, a redistribution of calcium-rich, electron dense pyroantimonate precipitates (EDPP). Precipitation predominantly occurred along the inner surface of the plasma membranes and within the granule halos. In contrast, the cytoplasmic matrix, the Golgi complexes and the rough endoplasmic reticulum contained only few fine precipitates. — The sulfonylureas investigated exerted identical effects on the histo- and ultracytochemical calcium distribution in B-cells. — The results indicate that sulfonylurea-induced insulin secretion is associated with an accumulation and redistribution of calcium within the B-cells. This supports the hypothesis that an altered calcium handling by the B-cell mainly accounts for the insulinotropic effect of sulfonylureas.

Notes: Summary To study the shapes of the suprapatellar bursa and the suprapatellar septum, 210 specimens were examined anatomically and 2056 patients radiologically. It is possible to classify the variants of the suprapatellar septum into four types on the bases of anatomical aspects. The type of suprapatellar septum determines the communication between the suprapatellar bursa and the knee-joint cavity and influences the proximal extension of the knee-joint cavity. A suprapatellar lateral recess shaped like a saccular space was found on the lateral side of the suprapatellar bursa in just under 20% of the knee joints. There was no corresponding suprapatellar recess on the medial side. Pneumoarthrography is an effective tool for demonstrating the variable structures and spaces of the synovial cavity of the knee joint. The radiological findings correlate with the results of the anatomical studies.

Notes: Summary The effect of a 30 min infusion of nicotinic acid on the blood levels of glucose, pyruvate, lactate, FFA, glycerol, catecholamines, and 11-OH-corticosteroids was investigated over 180 min in 73 insulin-dependent diabetics with different clinical states of metabolism and in 7 healthy subjects. The action of nicotinic acid on insulin secretion was measured in vivo in some diabetic and some healthy subjects by means of ILA. Studies on insulin secretion in vitro were done by measuring the insulin release from isolated islets of mouse pancreas. The insulin content of the incubation medium was estimated with the radio-immunological method. — It was shown that nicotinic acid in vitro stimulates insulin release from B cells significantly. In vivo the rise of serum ILA after nicotinic acid infusion was only detectable in healthy subjects and in diabetics of the stable type. Furthermore, a negative correlation was demonstrated between the peak of the FFA-rebound induced by nicotinic acid and the stimulatory effect of the drug on insulin secretion. The behaviour of blood glucose during infusion of nicotinic acid together with the daily insulin dosage permitted a metabolic distinction to be made between diabetics of the stable and unstable (‘brittle’) type.

Description / Table of Contents: Contents From a survey of the important stray-field sources of a grain oriented M-shaped silicon-iron sheet follows that only the stray field at the air gap can give a remarkable contribution to the stray-field coupling. The influence of this air-gap stray fields on the magnetization structure and the magnetization reversal of a neighbouring sheet is investigated. From the shielding effect of the neighbouring sheet in dependence on the excitation in an applied field some statements concerning the influence of the stray-field coupling on the energy loss and the efficiency of the complete transformer core consisting of several sheets are derived and some proposals for the improvement of the efficiency during voltage transformation are given.

Notes: Summary A light and electron microscopic study on a surgically removed medulloblastoma with spongioblastic cells was carried out. In these cells the massive occurrence of glial fibrils is a frequent finding. In addition there were observed many cells with abundant droplike inclusions. Those inclusions are formed by aggregation of glial filaments in a similar manner like Rosenthal Fibers. This process is obviously combined with a dystrophic alteration of the cell. It is suggested that the occurrence of these spongioblastic cells in a medulloblastoma is rather due to a differentiation of medulloblastoma cells, than to a coincidence of 2 kinds of neoplasms. This phenomenon points to the neuroectodermal origin of the medulloblastoma.
