Tricyclo[4.1.0.02,7]hept-3-enes via Rearrangement of 7-endo-Chloro- and 7-endo-Bromotetracyclo[4.1.0.02,4.03,5]heptanes7-endo-Bromo- and 7-endo-chlorotetracyclo[4.1.0.02,4.03,5]heptanes can smoothly be rearranged thermally. If the 7-exo-position is also occupied by a halogen atom (4a-c), the 4,5-dihalogentricyclo[4.1.0.02,7]hept-3-enes 6a-c are obtained in high yields. In the case of a hydrogen in the 7-exo-position (4d,e), however, the reaction does not terminate at the tricycloheptene system, but leads to 7-bromo- and 7-chloronorbornadien (8d,e), respectively. In these rearrangements the tricyclo[4.1.0.02,7]heptenyl cation (5d) and its 4-halogen derivatives 5a-c are intermediates. The different reaction rates not only of their formation but also of their rearrangement into the corresponding 7-norbonadienyl cations 7a-d cause the varying results of the thermolysis reactions. Reduction of 6a-c with lithium aluminium hydride produces the 4-halogentricycloheptenes 15a-c. Sodium in liquid ammonia transforms 15a and 15b in good yields to the unsubstituted hydrocarbon tricyclo[4.1.0.02,7]hept-3-ene (16), the 1H NMR spectrum of which is discussed thoroughly.
Notes:
