Notes:
Summary 2950 sera of patients were tested on listeriosis from 1. 11. 68 till 31. 3. 70. The sera were tested untreated and after treatment with 2-mercaptoaethanol by the Widal-reaction using O- and H-antigens type 1 and 4b ofListeria monocytogenes as well as by the complement fixation test. Complement fixing antibodies were not observed in the 2950 sera. On the other hand 94.2% of the sera contained mercapto-aethanol-sensitiveListeria agglutinins. Mercaptoaethanol-resistent agglutinins of the type IgG, which, according to Osebold, are possibly of diagnostic value, were found in only 0.4% of the sera. In order to test whether a listeric aetiology of habitual abortions is serologically demonstrable, comparative investigations with three groups of sera from women with and without habitual abortions as well as from men of similar age were carried out. However, no statistically demonstrable differences were obtained. Our findings indicate that the listeric aetiology of habitual abortions can not be serologically clarified. The aetiologic diagnosis of listeriosis has to be done by cultivation of the organisms.
