    Notes: Identical- and mixed-chain di(polyprenyl) phosphates, derived from 3-methyl-2-buten-1-ol, (E)-geraniol, (E,E)-farnesol, (E,E,E)-geranylgeraniol, (R)-citronellol, or (R)-tetrahydrogeraniol have been synthesized by phosphitylation and oxidation with iodine/water. These phosphates gave organized systems in water, in particular vesicles, the physical properties of which were studied by photon correlation spectroscopy, electron microscopy, entrapment of a fluorescent dye (calcein), 31P NMR, stopped-flow/light-scattering studies, and fluorescence polarization with lipophilic probes. Interdigitation of mixed-length phosphates was not found to have any favorable effect on the stability of the vesicles. The C〉15 vesicles were formed despite the fact that they are composed of only one molecular species and are devoid of any reinforcer, but those with two geranyl chains appeared to be rather fragile. Phosphates containing C5 chains are soluble in water. The results obtained lend weight to the hypothesis that polyprenyl phosphates might have been primitive membrane constituents, and stimulate the search for appropriate reinforcers.

    Notes: The development of functional supramolecular devices built by self-assembly of elementary molecules and with bioactive properties arouses considerable interest in the field of nanotechnology and new materials. We report here the formation of a new class of lipid tubules exhibiting both properties of molecular recognition and crystal formation for the protein streptavidin. These lipid tubules, made of biotin-containing dioctadecylamine molecules, are straight hollow cylinders with a constant diameter of 27 nm and variable length up to several micrometers. They are unilamellar with an inner diameter of about 16 nm, as shown by cryoelectron microscopy. Streptavidin binds to the biotinylated tubules and assembles spontaneously into ordered helical arrays at the tube surface. These crystals exhibit regular order up to about 1.5 nm resolution. In addition, the helical streptavidin arrays act as functionalized supramolecular devices that bind a wide variety of biotinylated objects, as demonstrated here with proteins and liposomes.

    Notes: The dependence of the protonation of neutral ammonia on the axial kinetic energy of protonated reactant ions has been studied in the gas phase, using various protonated carbonyl compounds, inside the collision cell of a tandem quadrupole mass spectrometric system. The hypothesis of two different and non-competitive reaction channels has been proposed. The first is characterized by a very low (peaked at ±0.05 eVcm) and well-defined axial kinetic energy of the reactant ion, while the second is more energy demanding (estimated threshold at ±0.2 eVcm) and expressed by a collisionally induced dissociation-like energy curve. Fourier transform mass spectrometric experiments have shown that ammonium ion can be generated by direct proton exchange and fragmentation of the adduct ion obtained.

    Notes: ---Pyridinium amphiphiles have found practical use for the delivery of DNA into cells. Starting from 4-methylpyridine, a general synthesis has been devised for the production of pyridinium amphiphiles which allows variation in both the hydrophobic part and in the headgroup area of the compounds. By means of differential scanning microcalorimetry, zeta potential, particle size measurements and cryo electron microscopy, some characteristics of the pyridinium amphiphile/DNA complexes have been determined.

    Notes: Two-dimensional arraysThe term array is used to describe a regular arrangement of motifs without implying the existence of translational symmetry elements between motifs, by distinction with a crystal. of cholera toxin B-subunit (CTB) have been obtained by specific interaction with lipid films, as described by Ludwig et al. (1986). The relationship between two types of array, of either rectangular or hexagonal geometry, was analyzed using crystallographic methods of electron image analysis. Our results showed that the type of array obtained was highly dependent on the negative stain used and that both arrays presented related lattice parameters, indicating that they originated from a common unstained structure. Image analysis of hexagonal arrays at 17 Å resolution revealed variable CTB projected structures, ranging from annularly symmetric particles to highly asymmetric particles, very distinct from the pentameric structure resolved from rectangular crystals. The present data suggest that hexagonal arrays result from an imperfect staining of CTB rectangular crystals. The staining distortion is such that the stain layer does not match faithfully the pentameric protein distribution whereas the regular organization of the specimen is maintained.
