Photochemistry of Aromatic Nitro Compounds, VII. Photolysis of β-Deuterated 1-tert-Butyl-2-nitrobenzenesPhotolysis of β-deuterated 1-tert-butyl-2-nitrobenzenes 9-11 in methanol occurs without loss of isotopic label both in recovered starting material and products. The product 7 (R = tBu) as well as recovered starting material from irradiation of 1,4-di-tert-butyl-2-nitrobenzene (1, R = tBu) in methan-[D]ol do not show any deuterium incorporation. Both results demonstrate that the diradical 2 does not return to 1 but rapidly cyclizes to yield 4 or 5. A methyl group of the side chain in 9 or 10 is attacked by the excited nitro group 4.1-4.8 times faster than is a trideuteriomethyl group.

Die Photolyse der β-deuterierten 1-tert-Butyl-2-nitrobenzole 9-11 in Methanol verläuft ohne Markierungsverlust sowohl im zurückgewonnenen Ausgangsmaterial als auch in den Produkten. Bei der Belichtung von 1,4-Di-tert-butyl-2-nitrobenzol (1, R = tBu) in Methan-[D]ol wird Deuterium weder in das Ausgangsmaterial noch in das Produkt 7 (R = tBu) eingebaut. Daraus folgt, daß das Diradikal 2 nicht zum Ausgangsmaterial 1 zurückkehrt, statt dessen cyclisiert es rasch zu 4 bzw. 5. Eine Methylgruppe der Seitenkette in 9 bzw. 10 wird von der angeregten Nitrogruppe 4.1 - bis 4.8 mal rascher angegriffen als eine Trideuterio-methylgruppe.
