Notes: Fluorescence detection is often used to obtain the extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) of dilute samples and thin films. As the samples become concentrated and the films become thick, significant errors can be introduced in the EXAFS amplitudes. With detailed calculations we determine the reduction in the coordination numbers (N) and the deviation in the mean-squared relative displacements (σ2) as determined by fluorescence detection. Experimental results on Cu, Ni, Fe, and Nb samples support the predictions of the calculation. We suggest corrections to obtain the correct coordination numbers and σ2 values for studies of concentrated samples by fluorescence EXAFS detection when other methods are not feasible.

Notes: Recent results of perturbed-angular-correlation experiments on La2−xSrxCuO4+y, for x zero1 or small,2 indicate that as-prepared materials contain an excess of oxygen which may be removed by annealing in vacuum. Inspired by these results, we have explored the magnetic behavior of Sr-doped materials that have received treatment by vacuum annealing, our primary interest being the observation of a bulk transition to the apparent spin-glass phase which occurs at low temperatures (Tf〈20 K) for 0.02≤x≤0.07.3 While as-prepared materials do not exhibit a bulk transition at Tf, we observe a clear anomaly at Tf in vacuum-annealed samples, below which the latter also display the magnetic irreversibility characteristic of spin glasses. The values of Tf obtained from bulk magnetization correspond closely to those derived from microscopic probes.3 We will discuss the results of measurements of the bulk magnetization in vacuum-annealed samples with varying Sr content, together with information from recent experiments, utilizing ESR and NMR, designed to improve our understanding of the microscopic nature of the moments which participate in the ordering at Tf and of the nature of the ordering itself.

Notes: In order to investigate the magnetic anisotropy, low field magnetization measurements have been carried out on various samples of magnetically annealed Metglas 2605 CO. The as-fabricated material exhibits a magnetic anisotropy with the easy axis along the ribbon length. By using the magnetic annealing treatment which yields an enhanced value for the magnetomechanical coupling factor, a magnetic anisotropy is induced with the easy axis in the plane of the ribbon and perpendicular to the length. A value of K=4.3×103 erg/cm3 is calculated for the induced anisotropy energy constant at room temperature. Using a model based on simple domain rotation, a value of λs=25×10−6 is estimated for the corresponding saturation magnetostriction. The anisotropy increases 37% when the temperature is reduced to 77 °K. Values are presented for the saturation magnetization, domain magnetization, coercive field, and initial permeability.

Notes: We have utilized x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) to study the local structural order of dopants in ternary alloys of the composition Ni75(Fe/Co)xAl25−x. In γ′-Ni75Al25, the first coordination shell around Al consists of 12 Ni atoms, whereas Ni is surrounded by 8 Ni and 4 Al atoms. Cobalt absorbers exclusively occupy the Ni sublattice, yet the Co XAFS shows only Co–Ni bond contributions in the first peak of the Fourier transform, with the Al backscattering being either completely absent or so weak that it is masked by the strong Ni backscattering background. A model based on a highly distorted Al sublattice, created by dopant atoms occupying the Ni sublattice, gives a possible explanation for the absence of Al backscattering contributions, and furnishes an explanation for our results on Fe dopants in γ′-Ni3Al, as well as results from similar studies by others on doped γ′ nickel aluminides. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In situ grown La-Ca-Mn-O films with (100), (110), and mixed orientations have been prepared by pulsed-laser deposition on YSZ-buffered Si(100) and Si(111) substrates. X-ray diffractometry, magnetoresistance (MR), and magnetization of these films were measured. The best magnetoresistance was observed in the single-phase, epitaxial (110), and this structure was grown with the best quality on the YSZ(111)-buffered Si(111) substrates. These films showed higher temperatures for the peak resistivity than those in the (100) films. In a magnetic field of 5 T, the maximum magnetoresistance of 250% and 164% occurred at 195 and 140 K, respectively, in the as-deposited (110) and (100) films. The MR behavior of these two orientations, as a function of the substrate temperature during La-Ca-Mn-O film growth and the orientation of the YSZ buffer layer, is discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract We report transverse field muon spin rotation experiments carried out on Tl2Ba2CuO6+δ. This system spans the whole overdoped regime, in which Tc is reduced by excess oxygen doping despite an increasing normal state carrier concentration. In the heavily overdoped regime the extrapolated low temperature depolarization rateσ(0) is found to scale linearly with the superconducting critical temperature Tc similar to the behavior previously observed for other cuprates in the underdoped regime. In the framework of the clean limit London model,σ(0) ∝λ −2 ∝ n s (0)/m s * , suggesting that the depression of Tc by overdoping is associated with a decrease of the superconducting condensate density. This needs to be understood in view of the observed increase in the normal state carrier density. We discuss some possible explanations for this behavior.
