Notes: Helicobacter pullorum and Campylobacter lari are rarely isolated from humans with acute enteritis. Hitherto the two species could only be identified by genotypic techniques. Gas liquid chromatography of whole cell fatty acid extracts is described as the first phenotypic method for discrimination of the two species. Cholesteryl glucoside, a characteristic feature of the genus Helicobacter, but seldom found in other bacteria, could not be detected in Helicobacter pullorum. Therefore, rapid determination of this glycolipid may serve as a discrimination marker for Helicobacter pullorum from most other Helicobacter species.

Notes: Abstract Development of resistance to nalidixic acid, norfloxacin and ciprofloxacin was observed in five patients withCampylobacter jejuni orCampylobacter coli infection. From all these patients nalidixic acid- and quinolone-susceptible strains were isolated initially, whereas after therapy with norfloxacin or ciprofloxacin strains resistant to these antibiotics were found.Campylobacter strains from the same patient always belonged to the same species and, with the exception of one case, showed identical rRNA gene restriction (rDNA) patterns. This indicates that double-infection with a susceptible and a resistant strain was not responsible for the phenomenon but rather that the infecting strain rapidly developed resistance following treatment.

Notes: Abstract A case-control study was conducted to identify determinants for the acquisition of sporadicSalmonella infection in Switzerland. Over a one-year period (1993), 223 case-control pairs were enrolled in the study and risk factors were assessed by means of self-administered questionnaires. Three-quarters of the isolates were identified asSalmonella enteritidis, most of which (80%) belonged to phage type 4. There were distinct differences in risk factors between infections withSalmonella enteritidis and those with otherSalmonella serovars. In both groups recent travel abroad was positively associated with illness. This association was more pronounced for infections with non-enteritidis salmonellae [odds ratio (OR) 39.5; 95% confidence interval (CI) 6.6–236.8, compared toSalmonella enteritidis 4.0; 95% CI 1,8–9.1]. Among the presumably imported infections,Salmonella enteritidis was acquired mostly in other European countries, while other serovars were acquired mostly in countries outside of Europe. Eating food containing raw or undercooked eggs during the three days before the onset of illness increased the risk of infection withSalmonella enteritidis. Desserts made with raw eggs (OR 4.6; 95% C I 2.0–10.6) were more strongly associated with disease than consumption of soft-boiled eggs (OR 2.1; 95% CI1.2–3.7), suggesting that the risk of infection was dependent on the extent to which eggs were cooked. Egg consumption was not associated with infections with serovars other thanSalmonella enteritidis; however, the intake of medications other than antacids was found to be a risk factor (OR 3.5; 95% CI1.1–11.4).

Notes: Abstract Five verotoxin producingEscherichia coli strains were detected in 405 patients with infectious gastroenteritis and 3 such strains were detected in 11 patients with the hemolytic uremic syndrome in Switzerland. Production of verotoxin 2 was associated with the latter three strains. Four strains reacted with the probe for the virulence plasmid ofEscherichia coli O157:H7, and six reacted with a recently described probe for theeae gene of enteropathogenicEscherichia coli. None of the strains was of serotype O157:H7. The methods available at present for detecting toxins or toxin genes will reliably detect all such verotoxin producing strains.
