    Notes: Using a cuprous oxide manometer developed by Reyes et al. [Rev. Sci. Instrum. 63, 3120 (1992)] we have measured the pressure applied to powdered cuprous oxide due to thermal contraction of an epoxy matrix commonly used for cryogenic nuclear magnetic resonance experiments. The measured pressure is approximately 1 kbar at low temperatures, which is significant for certain materials. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The enteric bacterial flora has been implicated in the pathogenesis of enterocolitis and colon cancer in C57BL/6 IL-10 knockout mice. Probiotic Lactobacilli modify the enteric flora and are thought to have a beneficial effect on enterocolitis. We conducted a controlled feeding trial in IL-10 knockout mice using the probiotic Lactobacillus salivarius ssp. salivarius UCC118.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Aim:To determine the effect of probiotic consumption on the gastrointestinal microflora, tumour development and colitis in IL-10 knockout mice.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods:Twenty IL-10 knockout mice were studied (10 consumed probiotic organisms in milk and 10 consumed unmodified milk) for 16 weeks. Faecal microbial analysis was performed weekly to enumerate excretion of the probiotic UCC118, total lactobacilli, Clostridium perfringens, bacteroides, coliforms, bifidobacteria and enterococci. At sacrifice, the small and large bowel were microbiologically and histologically assessed.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Results: L. salivarius UCC118 was detected in faeces from all mice in the probiotic fed group, but not the control group. Faecal coliform and enterococci levels were significantly reduced in probiotic fed animals compared to the controls (P 〈 0.05). At sacrifice, a significant reduction in C. perfringens numbers was observed in the test mice (P 〈 0.05). There were no fatalities in the test group compared to two deaths from fulminant colitis in the control group. Only one test mouse developed colonic adenocarcinoma compared to five in the control group. Test animal mucosal inflammation consistently scored lower than that of the control mice.〈section xml:id="abs1-5"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusion:In this placebo controlled trial, modification of enteric flora in IL-10 knockout mice by probiotic lactobacilli was associated with reduced prevalence of colon cancer and mucosal inflammatory activity.

    Notes: Turnip (Brassica campestris, L. var. rapifera) roots were stored unwaxed and waxed with a water-miscible, carnauba-based wax in vented plastic bags or in cardboard produce boxes for 6 weeks. Packaging turnips in plastic bags reduced weight loss during storage more effectively than waxing or storing in boxes. The purple color of the turnips faded regardless of package used; waxing temporarily darkened and intensified the purple color. The white or cream portion of the roots was not affected by waxing but became light tan when roots were stored in boxes. The chroma of the white portion increased during storage regardless of package or wax treatment. These results indicate that the external purple color of the turnip root was unstable during storage and this color loss was independent of weight loss.

    Notes: The quality of soft-fruited (‘Shawnee’) and firm-fruited (‘Navaho’) blackberry cultivars held under simulated retail conditions was determined. Leakage and decay increased during storage and exceeded 20% in 'Shawnee’ fruit after 14 days at 2C or 7 days at 5C, while ‘Navaho’ held under similar conditions was still marketable (〈10% decay). Transferring fruit to 20C for 2 days after low temperature storage intervals was detrimental to fruit quality, resulting in increased weight loss, leakage, decay and softening in both cultivars. After retail warming, ‘Shawnee’ fruit lost 25% of marketable fruit while‘Navaho’ had a 10% loss. Soluble solids concentration did not change significantly during storage, but titratable acidity declined 40–50%. Anthocyanin content increased from 20–100% depending on cultivar, storage temperature and storage intervals. The sugar composition of blackberries before storage was about 10, 260 and 260 mg/g dry weight, glucose, and fructose, respectively. Sucrose and glucose decreased and fructose increased slightly during storage. Warming fruit after low temperature storage did not accelerate loss of total sugars. If held constantly at 2C, ‘Navaho’ could be held 21 days.

    Notes: Radicchio (Cichorium intybus L., var. foliosum) heads were held at two temperatures in plastic dome lid boxes, 10 μm polyethylene produce bags, or 12. 7 μm EHC Clysar plastic shrink-wrap bags to determine postharvest quality changes. Respiration rate of 〈 10mL CO2 kg-1 h-1 at 1C indicates that radicchio is a moderately respiring commodity. Radicchio held in plastic dome lid boxes lost 〉 7% fresh weight while those in polyethylene or EHC bags lost 〈 1% fresh weight during 1 week of storage at either 10C or 1C. Color changes in radicchio occurred primarily in the red portion of the leaf area. Heads faded and lost color saturation between 1 and 4 weeks of storage at 1C. These changes were concomitant with the browning of the leaves. At 10C, heads held in produce or EHC.

    Notes: Abstract Two adolescent groups and an adult group were given a self-recognition task involving the tachistoscopic presentation of inverted photographs of their faces. Measures of narcissism, certainty of response, and response strategy were recorded. The young adolescent group was found to be more successful than either the late adolescent or adult groups. The former were also the most narcissistic. No sex difference was found, nor was there any difference when the faces of known or unknown peers were used as distractors. Age and narcissism were found to be equally good predictors of both self-recognition and certainty of response. Young adolescents tended to use the complete gestalt of the face more often as a recognition strategy than older adolescents or adults, who seemed to use idiosyncratic facial features. The results are discussed in terms of integrated approach to the development of body image and how the internal representations of the body are gradually built and modified by perceptual, cognitive, and personality functioning.

    Notes: Abstract Accuracy of body image, stereotypic preference, and aversion to body types were investigated in two studies. Using line drawings of 19 somatotypes in three orientations, 160 subjects in four age groups selected preferred, least preferred, and self-estimates of their own body types. Five independent ratings were made by judges of the subjects' body type. Females underestimated and males tended to overestimate their body dimensions. Both sexes overwhelmingly chose the endomorph as the least preferred somatotype. The consensus among females was to prefer slim figures and among males to prefer a medium muscular physique. In the second study three aspects of body image were studied by adjusting one's image on a television monitor that displayed a whole continuum of self-images from ectomorphy to endomorphy. Subjective body images were found to lie between the objective somatotype and the ideal.
