Notes: Synchrotron-based x-ray microbeam techniques have been used to map crystallographic strain and multilayer thickness in micro-optoelectronic devices produced with the selective area growth technique. Our main results show that growth enhancements in InGaAsP multilayer device material are different for well and barrier material. Comparison with a vapor-phase model for selective area growth suggests that this difference is due to different vapor-phase incorporation rates for the group III metals. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Fritillaria unibracteata is a famous and precious traditional Chinese medicinal plant. The technique of in vitro organ culture of Fritillaria unibracteata has been established and chemical composition of the metabolites have been confirmed. The experimental results indicated that Fritillaria unibracteata can be rapidly propagated, directly from small cuttings of the bulb by the technique of organ culture. The cultured bulb can be harvested after a 50-day culture period in MS media supplemented with 4.44 μM BA and 5.71 μM IAA. The growth rate was about 30–50 times higher than that under natural wild growth conditions. The content of alkaloid and beneficial micro-elements in the cultured bulbs were higher than found in the wild bulb. It is therefore possible to establish a novel process to produce this natural plant drug in future studies and achieve scale-up for industrial production.

Notes: Abstract The root ofSalvia miltiorrhiza is a traditional Chinese medicinal plant used as an important drug to cure cardiovascular diseases. Research on the technology of induction, identification and chemical analysis of polypoid plants is reported. The obtained results indicated that basal MS media plus 10 ppm colchicine can induce polyploid mutants effectively. Tetraploid plants were transferred to the fields so that comparative experiment for further identification, observation and screening of 15 agronomic characteristics could be made. The major chemical compounds, tanshinones, in two tetraploid plants were higher than that in the control. An excellent plant 61-2-22 may develop into a new variety for large scale production.
