Notes: The broadening of x-ray spectral lines has become an established diagnostic of Ne in high-density plasmas, particularly those of interest in inertial confinement fusion (ICF). Work to date has concentrated mostly on the broadening of K-shell lines in moderate Z (Z∼10–20) ions in plasmas with electron densities up to 1024 cm−3. In this paper we report on calculations of line broadening for Ne-like Xe (Xe44+) appropriate for diagnosis of higher density plasmas with Ne∼1025 cm−3. These calculations have been performed with a recently developed state of the art computer code which treats the ion and electron broadening in the quasi-static and impact approximations, respectively. In this paper, we summarize recent work examining the behavior of the width of the Ne-like Xe 3–2 and 4–2 transitions with electron density. The broadening of the 1s–3p line in H-like Ar and the 1s2–1s3p transition in He-like Ar is also studied in order to benchmark the code used in the calculations.

Notes: Abstract Fetal ovarian cysts are an increasingly common finding during routine prenatal ultrasonography (US). These lesions were occasionally diagnosed in the past, but only on the basis of a palpable abdominal mass or, rarely, because a twisted ovarian cyst caused an acute abdomen. Surgery is currently recommended for neonates after prenatal diagnosis, even in asymptomatic cases, when the cyst has a diameter larger than 5 cm or echographic findings suggest torsion or intracystic hemorrhage. In our 12 cases of suspected fetal ovarian cysts, wide variations in diameter were seen in 6 during pre- and postnatal follow-up. Two of these were not confirmed at birth; 7 were treated conservatively and excluding 1 perinatal death from multiple associated anomalies and 1 case lost to follow-up, the remaining cases showed uneventful, spontaneous regression of the cyst. Postnatal US signs suggesting necrosis secondary to torsion in a previously uncomplicated cyst and requiring surgery were seen in only 3 cases. Conservative treatment must be recommended in most prenatally diagnosed cysts; indications for surgery cannot be based only on dimensions. The incidence of complications has been overemphasized and the risk of associated malignancy is negligible in newborns, while possible size reduction and resorption can be expected in most cases. Nonoperative management may also be recommended when signs of torsion are seen before birth and spontaneous asymptomatic involution of the cystic ovary is documented in early postnatal life. Accurate clinical and US follow-up is mandatory in all cases. Surgery must be reserved for symptomatic cases or when an alteration of the cystic structure is documented by US in a previously uncomplicated cyst.

Notes: Abstract The management of 35 dilated ureters in 26 newborns admitted on the basis of a prenatal diagnosis is reviewed. Cases were divided according to the etiology of the ureteral dilatation after complete investigation (intravenous pyelogram, micturating cystogram, Tc-DTPA diuretic renogram). Primary non-obstructive/non-refluxing dilatations were managed conservatively, as were most of those secondary to bladder outlet obstruction after valve fulguration. Most of the cases with primary obstruction, reflux, or a duplicated system were treated with a primary or staged procedure. The authors believe that a certain number of neonatal dilated ureters discovered at prenatal ultrasonography can be successfully treated in a conservative manner after their etiology has been clearly demonstrated by accurate investigation. Attention must be paid in these very young patients, particularly if they are asymptomatic, to avoid overtreatment.

Notes: Abstract During the period 1972–1982, only 10 of the 105 patients under 20 years of age who underwent thyroid surgery (9.5%) had thyroid cancer. In these 10 cases total thyroidectomy was the treatment of choice. Lymphadenectomy was perfomed in 6 cases following intraoperative histological examination. In all cases, a total body scan was done 30 days after surgical excision. Three patients required complementary radiometabolic therapy. In three cases, lymph node metastases (found during follow-up visits at various times after the first procedure) were removed. All 10 patients are presently alive and without signs of disease. The authors, in their confirmation of the favorable prognosis of thyroid cancer in children and adolescents, stress the advantages of using near-total thyroidectomy and radiometabolic therapy in controlling the disease.

Notes: Abstract Penile curvature is an anomaly of the male genital organ characterized by axial or lateral deviation during erection. It may be congenital or acquired. Ventral curvature of the penis, common in the embryo, may persist in 31% of premature babies and tends to self-correction in the early months of life. Most cases present with moderate curvatures without functional problems. Some may present with marked curvatures in the early years of life, causing major psychological and functional problems. The authors present their experience in 16 consecutive prepubertal cases treated surgically and propose a new classification based on embryological considerations.

Notes: Abstract Among 36 children, mostly less than 1 year of age, referred for a complete duplex-system anomaly, 18 were diagnosed before birth by obstetrical ultrasonography where a diagnosis of dilated upper urinary tract was the most frequent report; in the remaining cases urinary tract infection was the main presenting symptom. Five children had bilateral anomalies. Principal diagnoses associated with the complete duplex system were: 18 ureteroceles (UC) (11 extravesical [EUC] with bladder-neck or urethral extension, 7 intravesical [IUC]), 5 ectopic ureters without UC and 28 lower-polar vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) associated in 6 with upper polar VUR. The initial assessment was based on a voiding cystogram and radionuclide scan. Renal-polar function was severely impaired when major ureteral ectopia or severe primary reflux was present. Primary surgery was performed in 8 patients, demolitive in 4 (3 upper-polar nephrectomies, 1 nephrectomy) and reconstructive in 4 (duplex en-bloc reimplantation); staged management with minimal endoscopic incision was undertaken in 15 UCs (9 EUCs and 6 IUCs). Expectant management was elected in all cases of mild primary, single, or double VUR not associated with UC and was followed by spontaneous reduction in one-half of the cases. Secondary VUR complicated endoscopic incision in 2 of 6 IUCs and 5 of 9 EUCs; a certain degree of functional improvement after decompression could be observed in all IUCs versus only 2 EUCs. Twenty-one patients requested secondary surgery; 17 needed an open intravesical procedure for ureteral reimplantation, combined in 8 with UC excision and bladder-floor reconstruction and in 5 with upper-pole nephrectomy. A nephrectomy was required in 4 cases. All primary or secondary demolitive procedures involved 9 of 11 EUCs extravesical and 2 of 5 ectopic ureters. EUCs and ureteral ectopia were associated with severe renal-polar damage, and function was rarely affected by primary decompressive procedures even in prenatally detected, uninfected cases. Endoscopic incision of EUCs was frequently followed by secondary VUR, which made secondary intravesical operations more complex. For these reasons, primary elective resection of a dysplastic upper pole is preferable in most cases to temporary decompressive measures. Conservative surgery is always indicated in IUC, which may benefit from endoscopic decompression. Isolated VUR involving the lower pole of a completely duplicated system may respond to expectant management in a significant number of cases.

Notes: Abstract. The autocorrelation function for the velocity and for the electric microfield of an impurity ion in a Two Ionic Component Plasma (TICP) is considered. A simple model is constructed for this purpose that preserves the exact short time dynamics and the long time global constraint of a given self-diffusion coefficient. The memory function and then the collision effects associated with the correlation function for the self-diffusion are expressed in terms of an effective two body interaction via a screened effective potential. The basic approximation used in our approach is the “disconnected” one that refers to the collision operator. A comparison of the prediction of this model for the self-diffusion and for the autocorrelation functions with the results of the molecular dynamics simulation developed in our laboratory (PIIM) shows an acceptable agreement over a wide range of plasma coupling, impurity ion charge and concentration.
