Notes: Abstract We studied some of the components of the kininogen-kallikrein-kinin system, simultaneously, in plasma and synovial effusions of patients with inflammatory articular diseases. Plasma and tissue kallikrein like activity and kininogen levels were evaluated. Active plasma and tissue kallikreins in plasma and synovial fluid were detected by their amidase activity upon specific chromogenic substrates. Kininogen levels were determined by a bioassay. Both specific amidase activity of plasma and tissue kallikreins were augmented in synovial effusions in relation to their own plasma activity. Kininogen levels in synovial fluid tended to be diminished in relation to plasma, however statistical significance was not reached. The consumption of kininogen is probably related to kinin production. This finding together with increased activities of plasma and tissue kallikreins reinforce the involvement of kinins in pathogenesis of inflammatory articular diseases.

Notes: Summary Fractionation of the poisonous secretion of the toadBufo marinus paracnemis Lutz, by dialysis and chromatography on QAE-Sephadex, led to the isolation of a fraction which was adsorbed to the ion exchanger. This fraction, when incubated with human serum, yielded an anticomplementary effect that was evaluated by measuring the kinetics of lytic activity on sensitized sheep red cells (classical pathway) and unsensitized rabbit cells (alternative pathway).

Notes: The rete testis was examined in the domestic goat (Capra hircus) by light microscopic means. Tissues were collected from 4 adult animals, fixed in bouin, Gendre, Zenker and in 10 % neutral formalin fixatives for histologic preparation. Paraffin embedded, 6 micron sections stained with Masson-Goldner and Hematoxylin and Eosin. The study of the rete testis was based on a model description of the human testis, and comparison are made with other species.

Notes: Abstract  The paper describes the atomisation process of a liquid in an axissymmetric shear layer formed through the interaction of turbulent coaxial jets (respectively, inner and outer jets), with and without swirl, in a model airblast prefilming atomiser. The atomisation process and spray quality was studied using different visualisation techniques, namely laser shadowgraphy and digital image acquisition. The experiments were conducted for different liquid flow rates, Reynolds numbers ranging from 6600 to 66000 and 27300 to 92900 for the inner and outer air flows, respectively, for different outer flow swirl levels, and two liquid film thicknesses −0.2 and 0.7 mm. All the tests were carried out at atmospheric pressure and using water. The results include the analysis of the film structure at break-up and of the break-up length, and suggest that the deterioration of the liquid film close to the atomising edge exhibits a periodic behaviour and is mainly dependent on the inner air velocity. Film thickness strongly affects the time and length scales of the break-up process for the lower range of air velocities. For higher inner air velocities, the break-up length and time become less dependent on liquid flow rate and initial film thickness.

Notes: Abstract It is known that in rats, heterologous nephrotoxic serum (rabbit antirat kidney) produces an acute hemorrhagic pneumonitis. Administration of anticomplementary substances such as heat aggregated human γ-globulin and zymosan, protects the animal from the pneumotoxic activity of nephrotoxic serum. Previous work has disclosed the presence of an anticomplementary substance isolated from normal urine by gel filtration that proved also effective in this regard. The present communication deals with some of the work developed in order to study the mechanism of the anticomplementary activity exhibited by the urinary substance. The preliminary findings are suggestive that the anticomplementary effect is the result of an activation of the complement system provoked by the urinary substance.

Notes: Abstract The resistivity of a one-dimensional lattice consisting of randomly distributed conducting and insulating sites is considered. Tunneling resistance of the form ρ0 ne bn is assumed for a cluster ofn adjacent insulating sites. In the thermodynamic limit, the mean resistance per site diverges at the critical filling fractionp c =e−b, while the mean square resistivity fluctuations diverge at the lower filling fraction $$p_{c_2 } $$ =p c 2 . Computer simulations of large but finite systems, however, show only a very weak divergence of resistivity atp c and no divergence of the fluctuations at $$p_{c_2 } $$ . For finite lattices, calculation of the resistivity at the critical filling is shown to be simply related to the Petersburg problem. Analytic expressions for the resistivity and resistivity fluctuations are obtained in agreement with the results of computer simulations.
