Notes: In the course of a discussion of the nature of an ambiguity in the indexing of Renninger peaks the possibility was discovered of distinguishing some opposite directions in a cubic crystal without recourse to anomalous scattering. A multiple-diffraction experiment performed on a (111) Ge plate rotated about [222] enabled distinction between the [1{\bar 1}0] and [0{\bar 1}1] directions to be made. The azimuthal angles counted from alternative zero meridians containing [1{\bar 1}0] or [0{\bar 1}1] are the same, but give rise to peaks indexed hkl and 2 - l,2 - h,2 - k respectively. However, dynamically equivalent situations 222, hkl/(2 - h,2 - k,2 - l) and 222, (2 - l,2 - h,2 - k)/lhk are geometrically different, being distinguished as Bragg-Laue and Bragg-Bragg, respectively, or vice versa.

Notes: The intensity of an X-ray (Bragg) reflection from a mosaic crystal plate under the conditions of multiple diffractions is discussed theoretically. The set of simultaneous differential equations is solved exactly for the two-beam and the three-beam cases. A second order approximation is given for the multiple beam case, and a third order approximation for the triple beam case. The fact that the ratio R of the peak intensity of a single diffracted beam to the intensity of the same beam under conditions of multiple diffraction depends on the mosaic spread η of the crystal provides a method to obtain this magnitude from the experiment. Preliminary measurements were performed on Si and Ge single-crystal plates under conditions of multiple diffraction. From them experimental values of R were obtained for different planes, which then were used to calculate the mosaic spread of the crystals. In this method only relative intensity measurements have to be used and most of the corrections found to be necessary in other procedures used to determine mosaic spread are not needed. The polarization factor for the case of a double reflection preceded by a monochromator is analyzed and the results are given in an Appendix.

Notes: The optical theory of Fabry-Perot interferometers (FPIs) for x rays using dynamically diffracting thin perfect crystals as reflectors is developed. Application to a device using high diffraction orders in silicon crystals of thickness of the order of 100 μm or more shows that energy resolutions of the order of a tenth of a meV are achievable. The effect that various features, such as gap and mirror thickness, lattice mismatches, etc., have on the FPI resonances is studied. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Rate equations are proposed which describe the operation of a crystal as a resonant cavity for x rays. The formalism, which applies equally well to two-beam or multibeam diffraction cases, is not restricted to any particular mechanism of x-ray emission. It automatically takes into account dynamical diffraction effects on energy flow (group velocity) and absorption (the Borrmann effect) which are shown to be instrumental in increasing gain and lowering the lasing threshold. The resonant x-ray modes are those for which the group velocity vanishes (the resonant diffraction condition).

Notes: The detailed measurement of the Bragg line profiles of several X-ray reflections from six single-crystal samples of LiF irradiated under different and well defined conditions in the core of a swimming-pool type nuclear reactor are reported. The crystals were irradiated with three different spectra: (a) total neutron spectrum plus the γ background radiation, (b) same as (a) without thermal neutrons, the crystal being wrapped in a cadmium foil, and (c) the background γ radiation alone. The experimental results presented display the changes in the profiles due to the different radiation spectra used and to the change in irradiation temperature within the interval from 113 to about 173°C. That peak intensities decrease while integrated intensities increase with irradiation is a well known result amply confirmed here. Integrated intensities in these experiments increase from 4 to 14 times with respect to the unirradiated crystal. The strongest reflections (111, 200 and 220) experienced the highest increases. The influence of the temperature of irradiation has been verified through measurements of reflections 111, 200 and 220 from crystals irradiated at temperatures of 113, 148 and 173°C. As the irradiation temperature rises the peak intensities clearly tend to those of the unirradiated crystal while integrated intensities attain a maximum at about 150°C. The results also indicate that at least under the conditions prevailing in the present experiments the highest amount of damage is due to thermal neutrons (E ≤ 0.45 eV).
