Notes: Summary The degrees of recrystallizability of silicone release coatings with different crosslink densities have been determined via monitoring the recrystallization peak of the temperature scan on the Rheometrics-RMS-800 Spectrometer and DSC. As the crosslink density of the release coating increases, the recrystallization peak of silicone diminishes sharply indicative of the increasing constrains imposed by the high crosslink density which reduces the recrystallizability of the silicone. In addition, Tg of the silicone also increases, together with a lower recrystallization and melting temperatures.

Notes: Summary Modified models for the prediction of the slope index of the viscoelastic master curve in the primary transition region for vinyl polymers with either bulky side groups or α-methyl groups have been proposed. Very good agreeements between predicted and experimental values are found. The modified models take into account of the effect of the bulky side group or α-methyl groups in the contribution to the corrected number of the main-chain atoms. The predicted slope index was found to be proportional to (i) the average cohesive energy per main-chain atom; U/N, which represents the enthalpic interchain interaction, (ii) the entropic intrachain interaction as defined by H/N, and (iii) the average spatial molecular volume per main-chain atom V/N.

Notes: A pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometric technique has been developed to study the thermal degradation of poly(vinyl chlorides) polymerized at different temperatures. Hydrogen chloride and benzene evolution during successive stages of pyrolysis have been quantitatively determined and correlated to the tacticity and molecular weight of the polymer. It was found that lowering the temperature of polymerization and molecular weight depresses benzene evolution and increases char weight but does not affect the HCl yield. It is suggested that the syndiotactic trans microstructure favored at low temperature of polymerization yields polyenes which cannot cyclize to form benzene. As the molecular weight decreases, the increase in number of vinyl chain ends facilitates pyrolytic crosslinking and char formation.

Notes: Carbon-fiber-reinforced (CFR) phenolic composites with equivalent mechanical properties and much superior thermal stability to laboratory-prepared and present commercial epoxy analogs have been achieved by reinforcing 35-50 wt % of an amine-catalyzed resole with either the Hercules' Magnamite carbon fabric or the Great Lakes' Varinit carbon fiber/glass cloth hybrid. Improvement of the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the hybrid-reinforced phenolic laminates was observed with increasing molding pressure and alternate carbon/glass/carbon/glass geometry. Sizings on the carbon fiber do not have any significant effect on the mechanical properties.

Notes: Dielectric dispersions of reconstituted collagens and gelatin were measured from 0.1 to 10 kHz and -160 to +160°C. At 0.1 kHz there is a γ transition at -80°C which is attributed to the H2O-coupled local modes. The process has an activation energy of 7.5 kcal. A devitrification process is observed at 10-20°C. Both of these processes have their counterparts in the dynamic mechanical measurements. The tan δ values are up to 3 times as great for the dynamic mechanical dispersions. There is an additional hightemperature dielectric loss transition which does not correspond to any seen with the mechanical experiments. A probable mechanism for this absorption is the Maxwell-Wagner-Sillars effect.

Notes: Dynamic x-ray diffraction and dynamic birefringence techniques are employed to determine the nature of the molecular motions associated with the α mechanical loss processes for low-density polyethylene. The results indicate that the low-temperature part of this loss (designated α1) is associated with an interlammellar “grain boundary” slip process while the higher temperature process (α2) involves intracrystalline motion and plasticity of the crystal itself. The activation energy for α1 determined by x-ray response is 25-30 kcal/mole, while that for α2 is 30-60 kcal/mole. The findings are consistent with dynamic infrared and dynamic light-scattering results which indicate that the motion of amorphous chains is closely correlated with that of the crystals. The relative contributions of amorphous and crystalline regions to the birefringence are dependent on the thermal treatment of the sample. The effect of static strain on the dynamic response indicates that crystal orientability is first increased with strain, probably because of splaying apart of lamellae, is subsequently decreased because of the restrictions of interlamellae tie chains, but then increases again as the spherulites are destroyed at high strain. The static strain reduces the orientability of amorphous regions.

Notes: The frequency dependence of dynamic mechanical properties of rat tail tendon (RTT), enzyme-solubilized collagen membranes (ESC), AKM-23 dialysis membranes, and gelatin film have been measured at 110, 11, and 3.5 Hz from - 160 to 220°C. RTT and AKM-23 are devoid of a rubbery region; there are as many as six mechanical loss transitions. Gelatin and ESC membranes behave as rubbery materials above room temperature; only three tan δE peaks can be resolved for these materials. Strain birefringence was used to measure the crystalline and amorphous contribution of orientation induced by strain. Both the birefringence and the strain optical coefficient are sensitive to the amount of water in a sample. The effect of chemical swelling agents and of annealing on birefringence are described. Stress relaxation data on gelatin film were analyzed with the rubber elasticity theory to give the average number of chains per unit volume, the specific polarizability, the stress-birefringence ratio and the average molecular weight between hydrogen bonds were calculated. The intrinsic amorphous birefringence for “wet” gelatin film is 1.25 × 10-2; it is estimated to be about 6 × 10-2 for “dry” gelatin film.
