    Notes: Computers which are used conventionally in numerical models for problem-solving and fast number-crunching are not user-friendly and lack knowledge transfer in model interpretation. Recent advances in artificial intelligence make it possible to systemise the experience and decision-making procedures of human experts. This paper describes the development of a prototype knowledge-based system (an advanced technique of artificial intelligence) as a knowledge-transfer tool for water-resource planning and management in coastal waters. The system can (a) run on a desktop computer and (b) act as a design aid, to assist in numerical modelling to simulate flow and/or water quality. Using the application in Hong Kong coastal waters, it was verified that the prototype system had the capability to undertake the reasoning process to select the model and associated parameters, equivalent to a human expert.

    Notes: Brillouin frequency shifts from light scattering are used to measure the variation with pressure of the zero-frequency glass transition temperature Tg in atactic polystyrene (PS) at pressures up to 3 kbar. These results are extrapolated to high pressures and compared with theoretical predictions. Experimentally it is found that Tg asymptotically approaches a critical value at high pressures. The equilibrium lattice model of DiMarzio, Gibbs, Fleming, and Sanchez which approximates the residual entropy of a polymeric glass correctly predicts the experimentally observed trends. The molecular theory of Bengtzelius, Götze, and Sjölander is also qualitatively correct at high pressures even though it deals with the glass transition of a classical monatomic fluid. Neither theory is quantitatively in agreement with our results.

    Notes: : Reservoir flood control is operated in real time so finding the optimal solution is unnecessary since it may not be practical. The key to reservoir flood control operation is quickly generating some feasible and effective alternatives and then selecting one among them. A fuzzy iteration methodology, which gives the objective weight and the relative membership degree of alternatives at the same time, is presented. Since the weight and relative membership degree are directly acquired from the recommended alternatives provided by decision makers, the results are more reasonable and realistic. Besides, the difficulty in giving weights is also avoided. With the aid of a robust and flexible decision support system, the effectiveness of decision making can be improved.

    Notes: A new two-layer, two-dimensional mathematical model employing a finite difference method based on numerically generated boundary-fitted orthogonal co-ordinates and a grid ‘block’ technique for unsteady boundary problems is developed which can be used to simulate flows with density stratification in a natural water-body with complicated topography. In the model the turbulent exchange across the interface is treated empirically and a time-splitting finite difference method with two fractional steps is employed to solve the governing equations. The model is calibrated and verified by comparing the computational results with data measured in Tolo Harbour, Hong Kong. The simulation results mimie the field measurements very closely. The computation shows that the model reproduces the two-layer, two-dimensional tidal flow with density stratification in Tolo Harbour very well. The computed velocity hodographs show that the tidal circulations at various positions in each layer have different patterns and that the features of the patterns are independent of the tidal type except for their scales. The computed Lagrangian pathlines show that the tidal excursion is dependent on the tidal type, especially in the inner harbour and side-coves.
