Notes: Abstract The nesting season of the green turtle, Chelonia mydas on Wan-An Island, Peng-Hu Archipelago, Taiwan extended from early June to early October in both 1992 and 1993. Turtles nested on 9 of the 11 beaches on the island. The average inter-nesting interval was 14.9 d. A close relationship between the first reemergence time and the tidal cycle was found in the present study. The mean straight carapace length of the adult female was 96.6 cm. Female turtles produced from one to nine egg clutches; the average clutch size was 113 eggs. The mean egg size was 46.9 mm in diameter and 22.7 g in weight. The average incubation period was 49.3 d. The sediment characteristics of the beaches on the island are well within the incubation requirements for green turtle nesting. The average hatching success was 70%, but was lower in the artificial nest. The average size for hatchlings was 46.9 mm in straight carapace length and 22.7 g in body weight. The health of the hatchling is influenced by the adult female size, the nesting depth and the precipitation during incubation.

Notes: Abstract  Temporally correlated Rayleigh/Mie scattering images were used to examine the convection characteristics of the large-scale vortex structures developing in flowfields created by sonic transverse injection through circular and elliptical nozzles into a Mach 1.98 crossflow. Both compressibility and injector geometry were found to have significant influences on the convection characteristics of the large eddies. High compressibility injection cases produce eddies having dramatically larger near-field convection velocities than those in low compressibility cases. Farther downstream, the large-scale vortices tend to travel at velocities nearer the freestream veocity. Injector geometry primarily affects the near-field behavior.

Notes: Abstract The capacity of N-oxidized metabolites of 4,4′-methylenebis(2-chloroaniline) (MBOCA) to form hemoglobin (Hb) adducts was determined in vitro, and the formation of Hb adducts following in vivo administration of MBOCA was assessed with or without prior induction of cytochrome P-450 enzymes with phenobarbital or β-naphthoflavone. Hb adduct formation was determined by electron-capture GLC of MBOCA as the heptafluorobutyryl derivative following mild acid hydrolysis of protein-bound MBOCA. The method was confirmed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry with selected ion monitoring. N-hydroxy- and mononitroso-MBOCA, but not MBOCA itself, formed adducts to rat and human Hb in vitro in a dose-related manner. Binding was inhibited by cysteine and glutathione but not oxidized glutathione or methionine. Intravenous administration of as little as 0.04 μmol/kg N-hydroxy-MBOCA to rats resulted in measurable formation of MBOCA-Hb adducts (0.9 ng/50 mg Hb). Intraperitoneal administration of 0.5–50 mg/kg MBOCA to rats, and subcutaneous administration of 5–500 mg/kg MBOCA to rats and 4–100 mg/kg to guinea pigs resulted in dose-related formation of Hb adducts. MBOCA-Hb remained elevated in blood for greater than 10 weeks following a single subcutaneous dose in guinea pigs. Pretreatment of rats with phenobarbital induced microsomal benzphetamine N-demethylase (BND) activity and resulted in a small increase in in vitro N- andortho- hydroxylation of MBOCA, but did not increase in vivo Hb adducts. Pretreatment of rats with β-naphthoflavone induced microsomal aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase as well as ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase, and increased in vitro N- but notortho-hydroxylation of MBOCA. β-Naphthoflavone pretreatment increased the formation of MBOCA-Hb adducts when rats were dosed with MBOCA at 100 and 500 mg/kg, but not 20 mg/kg subcutaneously.

Notes: This article describes the design and operation of a second-generation combined CARS-LDV instrument capable of measuring temperature and two velocity components in a turbulent combusting flowfield. Improvements to the instrument over the first-generation system include multiple acquisition modes ranging from independent to 4-μs time coincidence, more extensive automation of the data acquisition and burner controls, and improved procedures for analysis and display of raw data. Measurements made on a propane–air diffusion flame are discussed.

Notes: Using room temperature photoreflectance (PR) we have characterized the properties of three GaAlAs/InGaAs/GaAs high electron mobility transistor structures with two different well widths fabricated by molecular beam epitaxy on (001) GaAs substrates. The samples were denoted as #1, #2, and #3 with well widths of 140, 160, and 160 Å, respectively. Samples #2 and #3 were grown on substrates with different threading dislocation densities. For the latter two samples the well width exceeds the pseudomorphic limit so that there are some strain relaxation and related misfit dislocations as determined from the x-ray measurements. In order to detect the anisotropic strain of the misfit dislocations related to strain relaxation, the PR measurements were performed for incident light polarized along [110] and [11¯0] directions. Evidence for the influence of the strain relaxation upon the relaxed channel was provided by the observed anisotropy of the polarized PR signal in the InGaAs channel layer. Signals have been observed from every region of the sample, making it possible to evaluate the In and Al compositions, channel width and two-dimensional electron gas density, as well as the properties of the GaAs/GaAlAs multiple quantum well buffer layer. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Chilling tolerance was increased in suspension-cultured cells and seedlings of maize (Zea mays L. cv ‘Black Mexican Sweet’) grown in media containing glycinebetaine (GB). A triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) reduction test indicated that after a 7 d chilling period at 4 °C, cells treated with 1 mm GB at 26 °C for 1 d had a survival rate (30%) that was twice as high as that of untreated controls. The addition of 2·5 m M GB to the culture medium resulted in maximum chilling tolerance (40%). The results of a cell regrowth assay were consistent with viability determined by the TTC method. In suspension-cultured cells supplemented with various concentrations of GB, accumulation of GB in the cells was proportional to the GB concentration in the medium and was saturated at a concentration of 240 μmol (g DW)−1. The degree of increased chilling tolerance was positively correlated with the level of GB accumulated in the cells. The increased chilling tolerance was time-dependent; i.e. it was first observed 3 h after treatment and reached a plateau after 14 h. Feeding seedlings with 2·5 m M GB through the roots also improved their chilling tolerance, as evidenced by the prevention of chlorosis after chilling for 3 d at 4 °C/2 °C. Lipid peroxidation, as expressed by the production of malondialdehyde, was significantly reduced in GB-treated cells compared with the untreated controls during chilling. These results suggest that increased chilling tolerance may be due, in part, to the reduction of lipid peroxidation of the cell membranes in the presence of GB.
